Craft Room Makeovers!

Today it happened--I actually organized my studio!
It all started when I found a wonderful old hutch for $5 at a local thrift store. It fits perfectly on my too small of desk that is tucked away in a corner in my bedroom. Before it was just a cluttered mess, but now it actually is incredibly pretty and I'm so happy!

So who else out there has recently redone their work spaces?
Any tips or tricks for keeping it all organized?

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

Sure.

I go vertical as much as possible. I recently did a pegboard, a huge bulletin board and a dry erase board to assist. I even hung a clip light on the pegboard.

I put a shallow tote of bits and pieces of yarn, ribbon, fabric and paper under my work table for a foot rest and made a nice cushy pillow for my bum.

Over the Winter, I dedicated one closet to my supplies and hanging items. I even made 3 hanging organizers for smaller items...one on each end and one for inside the door. I put shipping supplies in totes on the floor and small folded items on the shelf on top of sturdy shoe boxes.

My favorite part is opening the door to see how nice it looks and to smell the sachets that I made and hung in there.

I got a little better at managing my time after I accomplished those tasks.

Have fun!!

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

I'm just jealous you have a craft room! :)

I put my sewing machine on the kitchen table when I need it, keep some yarn in plastic totes in the living room, and the rest of my supplies are in plastic totes in the basement storage room. I would love to have a place to work but we have a small house. Don't even have a closet we could convert like you see on Pinterest.

I'll have to steal some of those organizing tips! Vertical seems the way to go since we don't have a lot of space.

And I wouldn't really call it a craft room Julie--it's just a corner in the bedroom!

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

Back in January I got my first craft table. It's a table from Ikea that's in our study/computer room. I have a three drawer storage bin under it and some thing on top. It's keeping the mess off the kitchen counter and other random places. Super happy with it...for now.

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

I just finally got my own workspace this past week. I am sooo excited, and it is amazing to have everything in one spot. Before this week, I was painting in my living room, assembling/glueing, etc. in my kitchen, storing all my supplies in our library/den, and then doing random things everywhere else in the house. I was ready to throw everything out the window, I was getting so frustrated with the mess and hassle. Even though I hated to do it, I re-purposed our sun room/rec room and took it over. We folded up the bar, pushed the pool table against the wall, moved all of my supplies out of the den and onto bookshelves (in clear plastic storage containers), and put up a work table. I covered the pool table with plywood and am now using that as my painting table. I can do everything from start to finish in my new room, and it is the most amazing to feel like I am finally organized. Now...I can't promise the room itself is going to stay organized! LOL.

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

I love using drawers. I place small bins, boxes or compartments inside drawers to separate things. This way, you open a drawer and you can easily see what's in there. Also open cubby shelving with boxes and baskets work well for me. I think I'm making pretty good use of my little craft room area. It's hard to keep clean, though! I have to keep it somewhat neat, as it's open to my upper level and the whole family runs through there on a daily basis. ;)

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

I got kicked out of my studio in our spare room because we got a new roommate. So now I'm back in the living room, and it sure has gotten a makeover since I moved back in :P

Flowers, glitter, ribbon, and pearls everywhere, much to my fiance's dismay. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do :)

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

My living room was my studio but it was always too messy to have people visit. So I started doing up the space under my highset house. Stapled up flyscreens worked well for bugs and plastic patio curtains for the breeze and cold. I'm nearly done. Just have to get an electrician in to put in a powerpoint and some lighting and I am ready to hold workshops in my new studio space AND I now have a living space upstairs that is neat and tidy.

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

My dream is whenever we are finally able to build out own house is to have a craft room....with a TV.

I don't even have a corner I can use here. Forced hot air for heat so lots of floor vents. Thankfully, crochet can be done anywhere though and I just deal with toting my sewing machine back and forth from the closet to the kitchen table. :)

I do wish I could find a better way to organize everything. Working on re-organizing my storage room anyway so that will be part of it.

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

Awesome! It's so great to have things organised!

In my house, we're in the process of boarding up our loft/attic. I know that seems nothing relating to orgnaisation, but with that extra storage space, we will be able to clear our spare bedroom of boxes and essential but annoying garbage!
When our loft is boarded, we will have a whole bedroom spare. The next step is to decorate and furnish, so that I will be able to store my packing materials (boxes, bubblewrap, envelopes) in there. My desk is covered in files and bits and pieces at the moment, so it will be nice to have a place for my reams of paper and such! More space freed means more space to work in!

Re: Craft Room Makeovers!

I live in a tiny apartment and I've taken over a corner of the living room I have a sewing machine built into a small table and use plastic stackable drawers everywhere they'll fit. Won't be getting a craft table until my birthday, so I've hiked up my coffee table on piles of books. Shoe boxes also play a big part in my organization they go everywhere I can fit them. My corner is right next to my balcony so sometimes I pull out my craft stuff and go out there for a bigger work space :)
