Copying

Ugh! I know I have seen other people post about this but I just found someone who made similar gift sets, which is fine (soaps, honey in same gift boxes as mine, same method of tying the knot but at least different ribbon was used!) but they also copied my 'gifts from the hive' line as well! Very frustrating! Does anyone ever confront their copycats?

Re: Copying

It is frustrating, but your shop is amazing! I would love for one of my students to give me a gift set :) I would just focus on your own shop and making it stand out even more from other people on Etsy.

Re: Copying

Sorry Myla, but I don't see a line in your shop called 'gifts from the hive' at all.

You won't be able to stop people from offering beeswax candles and soap sets simply because they aren't a proprietary item.

If you have the phrase trademarked you can ask them to stop using the trademarked name.

But asking people to stop selling candles with soap is like me asking people not to sell soap dishes with crocheted washcloths. (Yes I make both as well).

Re: Copying

You have a beautiful shop! Try not to stress out too much, I am afraid Crochetgal is right. Just focus on your shop and try not to worry about what other people are doing.

Re: Copying

I can't find the ''gifts from the hive'' in your shop either - do you mean it's a phrase you use or a line of products you make?

I would try and get over it really, to be honest, so many other people make similar items, like crochetgal just said, you can't make people stop selling similar items to yours...who's to say that they weren't making them first anyway?

also, I don't know if it's ok to tag your items with ''teacher gift/hostess gift/gardener gift'' etc etc etc?

I may well be wrong though :)

Re: Copying

I know the feeling. This morning I saw a plush sloth that was pretty much exactly my design, except not done well at all, and it made me so mad. ::sigh::

Its so hard to ignore people copying, but its always going to happen when you make something awesome I guess.

Re: Copying

Sorry about that. When I type in "Gifts from the Hive" into the search bar I get 8 shop's listings but none for yours. So if it is something from your line it's not being promoted well.

Re: Copying

Beautiful shop, Myla!

Someone may copy your product but may not copy your personality and the service you offer. Focus on your shop and the ways in which you can stand out. Instead of thinking how your products are similar, think instead on how they differ.

As an exercise, pick any product you think there is a lot of around here and do a little bit of research (e.g., cards, scarfs, pencils, cake toppers, etc.) -- while a lot of these products will be similar to each other, there is something about one shop or another that will make you want to buy from them and not from their neighbor, and it is most likely not the way they name the line or tie the knot on the packaging. Gather your impressions and thoughts and see what insight form that you can apply to your wonderful products :))))

Best of luck!

Re: Copying

Thank you all! Yes, I think I let my initial emotions get the best of me. After thinking about it last night I realized I find inspiration on etsy and elsewhere and while I don't think I am copying, I will use an idea. And many of you are right - the items are make are from candle molds or soaps and there are so many out there!

My 'gifts from the hive' is on my shop banner, in my shop announcement and then I use it on my labels. I haven't been using it a lot in my tagging or descriptions. Maybe I should. Thanks for pointing out that that wasn't obvious to find. I feel like that's the whole focus of my shop and maybe I need to use it more. I also feel like it took me a while to bring that focus and idea to my shop, which is why I got a little frustrated. Thanks for listening!

Re: Copying

Unfortunately, unless you have something trademarked you are sort of out of luck. I have a follower that favorites every item in my shop, and a week later comes out with their own version of the item in the exact same color scheme. And they charge twice as much as me. I don't look at my competition simply for the fact that I may get an idea in my head and I wont know if I'm copying or its original - but it's beyond frustrating seeing someone copying my idea, so I know how you feel. BUT your shop is adorable! Just try to ignore it, and keep on being original and people will see that! :)

Re: Copying

I just confronted a shop last week that had one of my copyrighted photos on a iphone cover they were selling. I was so upset but after talking to the seller I calmed down she took it off her store and now im writing my name across all my photos which is very distracting, but I hope it will prevent it from happening again.
I think we are all going to come across copiers we just have to push thru and realize nothing is as good as the orginal!
Good luck

Re: Copying

Mary - love, love your bags! Thanks for saying hi!

Ariana - Great point about not looking at the competition. I have found since I have been selling for longer, that I hardly look anymore. I'll check once in a while but it's mostly to look at pricing and to make sure mine isn't too low.

A friend who also sells on etsy says people are going as far as copying and pasting photos so she is watermarking all of her photos. I hadn't realized that was happening.

Rosemary - no worries :) You had valid points and I really didn't take offense to them. It was a critique that I needed. I appreciate your comments. I think I just needed to vent and this is such a great community to do that with!

Re: Copying

I think you just have to think about this kind of thing as a compliment as long as its not completely taking your item/photos/etc. Sorry this happened to you!

Re: Copying

I've seen a lot of conversations about copying, but you have to remember that two people on different parts of the earth can come up with the same idea separately and create it. I've been approached by people that have said I've copied their work, which has not only been incredibly insulting but also factually incorrect.
I had someone moaning at me over the internet saying that I'd stolen their jewellery ideas and that I was brazen commenting on their work. However, the only similarity is that we both incorporated glass vials into our jewellery, and I pointed this out to them. It was as if they though any person making jewellery using a glass vial has copied them, but they're definitely not the first to use glass vials, and nor will they be the last.
I've seen people with very similar items to mine, and I do sometimes wonder, but I make sure that I keep producing new designs and creating better photos than other people to try and keep my work on top of the search.
Just be confident in your own brand and ability, and even if people have similar lines to you- through independent thought or copying, keep on top of your game and keep selling your wares, improving them and adding lines. Remember, if people are copying you, you'll always be one step ahead of them, so do your best to market yourself accordingly!
