I recently received conversation messages from two shop owners after I favored their shops and/or items. They thanked me for the favorite and asked me to like them on Facebook, sent a coupon, and gave me their sales pitch (a few other things as they were both lengthy messages). I thought this was kind of odd and wondered if it was a standard business practice among Etsy shops and I missed the memo? Not sure if I liked it or not, I think as a buyer it turned me off a bit as a seller...well I'm not sure on that either. Thoughts?

"If someone hearts your shop/item to mark it as a Favorite, that is not an invitation to send a Conversation to that person."

Hope this helps!

As you mentioned, this sort of thing is off-putting, and is actually against Etsy's Terms of Use.

I have been saying thank you to everyone, but not asking for them to tweet or LIKE me on my Facebook or Twitter. Do you think it is worth my time...part of me does it because it is out of good manners and maybe they will remember that I at least recognized them. I will ususally favorite their shop and/or item...is it worth it?

The coupon sounds nice! But I don't like the idea of repaying a random act of kindness with a request for additional favors.

I don't think you are allowed to send convos to people just because they favorited you (I may be wrong).

Just use the report button. They're breaking Etsy's TOU, and if every seller did this just about every business would be harmed, and people would be less likely to buy on here since we'd all seem pushy. They're not just harming themselves, they're harming us, too.
If I get messages like this, I tend to send them a message back to warn them that it's spam, but I report them anyway. Etsy is less likely to take action against them if they stop doing it right away, even if they're notified, but if they continue to do so something will happen. And even if I don't report them, others probably will instead.

It seems a bit pushy to me, I've had it a few times with links to facebook, twitter, etc.. but have ignored it.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'll double check Etsy TOU and go from there. Just glad this isn't a widely used practice because I wasn't too fond of it. Thanks again!

I was wondering about that, I've been on Etsy for years and the number of messages I've received from favoriting has been minimal to none. But in the last two weeks I've received 10. I was curious if they changed the rule or something. Individually they don't bother me, I just delete and move on. But after receiving 10 total I'm starting to feel ambushed and getting annoyed.

As a buyer, I would be irritated, and wouldn't like to favorite any one.

As a seller, I find it to pushy, and discouraging, it will make anyone back off, as when you go shopping at the mall and someone is trying to push a sale because you complimented on an item or two; that is pressuring someone...

I have posted my facebook page link in some team facebook threads, and then got likes from other Etsy shop owners along with private messages letting me know that they liked me and asking me to like them back. That really, REALLY irks me. I only like facebook pages that I truly support, and so I'd rather not have them like my page if it is solely to trade a like rather than actually being a fan of my items.

Only like my stuff if you actually like it. Otherwise I am only raising my number of likes. Not actually getting customers.

The thing is, though, there was an Etsy Success article sent out maybe two months or so back that encouraged sellers to sort of do just that--be in touch with people who like their shop, that sort of thing. I thought it was weird at the time that the author should be promoting something that really is kind of pushy.

If I get a note like that I usually ignore i

The only 'mass' convo I'll send out is if I've done a treasury and want to let the lucky shop owners know
