Colorful observations

I love colors! Bright and happy colors. I’m the type who wears yellow in the middle of winter! And naturally, I have lots of colors in my shop.

Yesterday, I had a look at my overall stats and something stood out….My items with the darkest colors (such as dark grey and dark blue) have the most views, the most admirers and have been in Treasury lists.

I was intrigued so I did some research about colors in relation to psychology and online shopping/browsing. Grey and blue are colors associated with loyalty and trust. That’s why lots of banks have blue colors and expensive cars are mostly grey.

Have you noticed any trends in your shops based on colors?

Re: Colorful observations

No, but I know that some of the fabric that I use tends to be what I like and think is so cute or beautiful, but not everyone has the same taste. I need to think outside the box and come up with different styles.
It is so hard to pin point a certain favorite color or style that everyone likes, so making a variety may help.

Re: Colorful observations

For my shop, the brighter the better. The most views, faves and treasury pics are my brightest and colorful items. Everything else kind of gets lost in the crowd.

Re: Colorful observations

I see it in my jewelry sales. I have noticed people prefer darker colors and solid metals. I think part of it is they think the darker colors will match more items. I have also heard people say as much as they like bright colors, they don't like to wear them because it attracts too much attention. I know as much as I love being surrounded by bright colors, I lean toward wearing darker colors because I think they look better on me.

Re: Colorful observations

I love bright colors too!!! I've sold a lot of bright and fun stuff, but I have to say that my most popular colors are grays and tans. They are pretty too, in their own way, but it's always a lot of fun to get an orange or lime green order.

Re: Colorful observations

I have seen a trend of the majority of my sales being gray and brown items with a few random other colors thrown in here and there. As for favorites, there is more of a variety in what colors are chosen.

Re: Colorful observations

That's an interesting point, thanks for posting that!! I haven't noticed any trends but it would be interested to see how shoppers will react if we focus more on colors and what they suggest and imply.

Re: Colorful observations

That's really cool! I am watching Top Gear with my hubby right now and they do show a lot of blue and grey cars! I am going to have to look at my shop and see about the stat trends in relation to color.

Re: Colorful observations

It's not a trend! People are more conservative than we think. People tend to turn towards SAFE colors like black, grey, brown, silver and gold. If the color is TRENDing - MAYBE they'll venture off and try it out. It kinda sucks for those of us who love colors!!!!!! That's why now I always have the basic colors in my collection but I refuse to stick the norm only! So COLOR stays any season, regardless.

Re: Colorful observations

My whole shop and everything I make is all about the brightest possible colors and putting them ALL together. I can't even relate to gray or dark blue. Luckily there are some buyers who love color, too, and somehow they do seem to find me.
I would be in a permanent bad mood if I tried to work with dark, dull colors. Just not me. At all. Ever.
BTW, nothing in my shop will ever be in a FP treasury. And I wish I could be a Featured Seller but I don't see that happening, either. But I have to be who I am and I have to make what I make.
And what I make, makes me happy. Very happy.
Good luck to everyone for a great holiday season!

Re: Colorful observations

Most of my sales are custom and they are bright... but I do children's clothing, which is fun in bright colors. :0) I think it would really depend on what you sell.

Personally, I would want a more neutral color also for knit neck wear. I LOOOVE color, but I would want something like a handmade accessory to be able to go with any of my outfits.... so I could wear it more often. ;0)

Re: Colorful observations

As fun as colors are, I think people are more likely to purchase something more neutral because it goes with more. I know I make bright hats and I'll wear them, but I'm more likely to choose a black or gray hat if I am going to buy it. weird how that works!

Re: Colorful observations

Thanks, Lydia! I love your shop too! Now we just have to find customers who are as crazy about bright colors as we are. I am sure they exist. We do. :)

Re: Colorful observations

Your shop is amazing and your colors are great )) I see the same tendency as well. Not all the people are brave enough to wear the colorful things, but I don´t think we have to change ourselves. If our soul is full of color we should create colorful things and our customers will surely come :)

Re: Colorful observations

We both love colors a bunch too, but we found that when we do shows (and on here), we need a healthy selection of basics like grey, brown, black, and cream.
As much as we're huge color lovers, I have a feeling that, when choosing accessories, people want to pick something they feel will match with other things they have.
But I'll admit, that's not going to stop us from populating our shop with color!!

Re: Colorful observations

Jora, when I buy jewelry, I almost always go with something really colorful. My clothing tends to be neutral, so I usually accessorize (when I do accessorize, and I'm not just wearing sweats), I like to add color with my jewelry.
What I've learned in the 9 months I've been selling on Etsy is to make what you love. Your customer is out there.

Re: Colorful observations

Hmmmm this is very enlightening! I love love love bright colors too and you can see than in my shop, definitely. I haven't really made THAT many sales and am still very new at selling so it's hard to say what my trends are. I have sold some bright colored accessories and envelopes... but I honestly don't have much variety in the "neutral" spectrum. Perhaps I"d be making more sales if I incorporated more greys, blues, browns, etc. Thanks for posting about this.
