Can somebody explain to me what a rehearsal dinner is?

Hi,

I wondered if anybody can explain to me what a rehearsal dinner is? I am from the UK and, as far as I know, it's a tradition we don't practice over here. I know they have something to do with weddings but would love to know what they are and why you have them.

It happens the night before the wedding. Everyone that is in the wedding and both the groom and brides parents are there. They run through what will happen (rehearse) at the wedding. Where people will stand, how to walk down the aisle etc.... Then they all will go to a very nice restaraunt and have dinner usually paid for by the grooms parents. The bride will hand out small gifts to the bridesmaids and groomsmen to thank them for being in the wedding.Usually she will also hand out gifts to parents as well.. :)

We had our rehearsal dinner at our apartment and ordered pizza. It can be as casual or fancy as you like. :)

Yes you still have the reception after the wedding.
The rehearsal dinner is usually just for close family, friends and the bridesmaids and groomsmen before the wedding and after the wedding rehearsal.

Yes, we still have the reception after the wedding. The rehearsal dinner is usually reserved for just the bridal party and close family. The reception is the big shin-dig (well, in my case it really wasn't that much bigger than the rehearsal dinner :)

My rehearsal dinner was just at our house and, my husband "cooked." I considered ordering pizza, though.
