5 success steps for product photos

Buddies - food for thought especially for newcomers! 90% of Etsy photo problems can be improved by following these 5 steps -

1) Focus. The entire item should be sharp and in focus.
2) Brightness. The overall image should be bright, bright, bright.
3) Even lighting. Shadows on the item should be reduced via use of a light-box or multiple light sources.
4) Real color. Color in the image should be faithful to the real item. Check your camera’s “white balance” setting and compare with your light source. Compare the final photo with the real item.
5) Image background. Two methods: 1) Simple. Use a clean, white background and surface for the item; or 2) Setting. Use a real-life setting showing the item’s intended use.

There are lots of more detailed photography resources on Etsy too! Spend time finding them and read 'n' heed!

Best wishes
Murray

Re: 5 success steps for product photos

Thank you! I think I need to do better in this department. I definately have shadows on my photos but live in Washington and daylight and my house structure dont work very well. I will need to keep working at it.

I couldn't agree more! I've had trouble with this from the start, and still struggle with it. I did recently purchase a lightbox, and it has really helped to cut down on the shadows. I used it for this picture and am really happy with it:

shopstarevna - very fine pictures, could stand to be a tiny bit brighter, and you can do this without taking new pictures of course, by using a picture editor and increasing "exposure" or "brightness" settings

samantha - super results

Angela - I made the 5 points as simple and direct as possible. You could also say - plain background, not too busy or cluttered, neutral tones, etc.

The main point is to focus the eye very effectively on your product.

Very important point - thanks!
