$24.99 or $25.00?

I keep hearing that pricing items in something that ends in $0.99 makes potential buyers feel like they are spending a decent amount less than they would have if it cost one cent more. They supposedly are more able to talk themselves into spending the money that way.
When I am buying something, however, I find items priced that way to be a little offensive, like someone is trying to trick me.
Have any of you guys tried both?

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

$24.99 reminds me of Walmart or an infomercial. I think for Etsy, rounded dollars are the best fit.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

I share your opinion, I'd never dare to priece a product 0.99.
I take it as an insult to one's intelligence and a miserable attitud.
Sorry if I sound to strong but I really hate that kind of behavior.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

i personally am not drawn to prices with .99, to me 24.99 is still 25 so that extra penny really doesnt sway me.

i have heard lots of people ask this and it seems like it doesnt really matter one way or the other.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

Very good subject. I too always round up when I personally shop and think, "Why don't they just round up." Do they think I don't know that $24.99 is really $25. (Giggle).

But now on the other hand, after I have done all my calculations and the item come out to be $13.00 I will charge $12.95. Why? The number 13 is unsettling to some people (not me) and I just think $12.95 looks better.

Also when I'm in say my Pay Pal account I can just look at the figures and know what item the customer had bought.

Bottom line is, "Round up" before you ".99", your customers will like it better and it is easier to add up at a glance. But on the other hand if your gut is telling you to go with a .99 then go with it.

Hope this has helped.
My best to all
Lisa Marie

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

I did some reading on this.... .99 works IF its at a major roll over. 19.99 29.99 9.99 89.99 kinda stuffs.

Something about our brains only really looking at the first numbers...while we know logically. its the same in general in a hurry.....its processed as the lower number.

For Here online artsy shopping, its not really a comparison this bread to that bread ...its a does the person love that item. So the .99 cent thing isnt going to work as well.

I hate the look of 9.99 - tacky like Walmart.
If you go to a fine art gallery you will never see those kinds of prices.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

.99 seems cheeky to me. I get turned off by it. It comes off like one of those annoying infomercials that tell you if you act now you can get it for 3 easy payments.

I'd be more apt to purchase something with a nice round number like $25.

25$. Or 26-27, since it does not feel like a difference anyway.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

I agree. I also will not put .99 because
1) looks like walmart
2) I tried it (a friend with retail experience suggested it) I ended up not selling a thing
3) I feel like they're trying to trick me into thinking it's cheaper than what it really is.

I'll stick with .00 .25 .50 .75
It's just easier to do calculations/estimates.

(I was at walmart today....there was an item for 2.74)
Still the one penny less concept, I guess.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

I've heard that buyers are attracted to odd numbers like $23, $27, etc.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

Hmmmm, very interesting. I started pricing things at $--.95, just because I personally liked the look of it better, but I never considered that it might actually turn buyers off.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

I like round numbers - BUT I have chosen to list in UK£ so my $prices are all stupid.

I did round a couple of things down to £24.99 simply because on another site I sell on they do a big feature on gifts under £25 and I wanted to get in there!

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

This is interesting. I've never considered the psychology of it. My past selling experience was ebay. Their fee structure used to govern that whole .99 thing. I just kept the habit I guess. I might consider changing them now, though.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

Also, bear in mind that not all sellers will be viewing in $, so your prices will look different to them anyway.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

Jessica,
I also feel as though someone is trying to trick me and insult my intelligence when 99 cents is used instead of rounding to the nearest dollar.

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

Wow! How interesting! I sell at .95 - I rounded up back along and sales dropped off a bit! Mind you I list in £ that are converted to $ so it's all totally random anyway!

If someone wants something they will buy it anyway I guess! Would hate to think that there was any trickery involved though - maybe I should round up!

Edited to add that I just looked at my shop as I covert my numbers they have to be the oddest ever! Would this put you off buying?

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

Don't our prices change anyway depending on where the customer is search from... My prices are in Canadian and I have them rounded but do my customers see them that way because our dollars are worth different amounts?

I like to use even dollar amounts. $25.00 seems "nicer" and "neater" somehow. :)

Re: $24.99 or $25.00?

I don't think the .99 does anything to sell an item. When I see .99 cent at the end of a price I usually think they are trying to fool me into thinking its less.
