$19.99 or $20?

So my marketing teacher was saying how prices ending in .99 instead of rounding up make people think they're getting a better deal and therefore you sell more. Do you think this this is true? Have you tried it out in your shop? Let's say I started selling my $30 shorts for $29.99 sure it's only a one cent difference but now it's in the 20's not 30's. Opinions please!

$30 looks more professional for a handcrafted shop.

$29.99 looks like a "bargain" deal.

Re: $19.99 or $20?

If you want to use cents, I'd recommend: $0.25, $0.50, $0.75, $0.00

I have items in my bath & body shop that are $X.25 or $X.50

Re: $19.99 or $20?

omg the .99 Don't do it! just go to the nearest dollar, please. Handmade shouldn't ever be treated as "deals" or "bargains".

Re: $19.99 or $20?

I agree with Jacque. I think whole numbers look classier, and going with the $.25 increments looks better than $.99 if you need to break up the dollars.

Re: $19.99 or $20?

Yes, whole numbers are much better. Research shows that people tend to buy more than one item if they can add it quickly in their head.

Re: $19.99 or $20?

I changes all my prices yesterday from X.99 to whole numbers having heard that 0.99 is a last century trick. And our hand crafted treasures are definitely not wanted to be seen as bargains! :-)))

Re: $19.99 or $20?

I think 19.99 only looks better when shopping in the store. I prefer round numbers on Etsy.

Re: $19.99 or $20?

I've read that setting a price at $19 is better than $20 because subconsciously the buyer imagines getting change back from their $20. I'm not sure it works but I can see how some people might think that way.

Re: $19.99 or $20?

.99's always bugged me a bit...it almost seems like the seller is trying to trick you into thinking you're paying less than you are. Not sure why I think that really, but I do think that whole numbers and .25s, .50s, etc. look better than .99s. I think rounding up to the nearest whole dollar amount would be a good thing if possible.

Re: $19.99 or $20?

I always try adding or subtracting two or three dollars, to break up the monotony. like 27.00 or 32.00

That's interesting as I list in whole pounds so my prices must look really strange in dollars.
