I recognize that many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner So I decided to give a tutorial. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your titles, but also for your tags.

1. Make an Google account (it's free) or sign in f you already have one.
2. Go to the TOOL tab and drop down to KEYWORD PLANNER
3. Go to SEARCH FOR NEW KEYWORD AND GROUP IDEAS
4 Go down to the third box that says PRODUCT CATEGORY and put in your product or follow the subcategories.
5. Go to the first box YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE and enter in any ideas you have for your item. You must hit enter after each idea.
6. Go to TARGETING and click on Google if you want Google and Search Partners
7. OPTIONAL:Then go to the gray box that says KEYWORD OPTIONS and click on the pencil icon. Turn on the top option that says "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms".
USE THIS FLAG: 1) when you want to only see suggestions very close to the keywords you entered. Do not check this flag if you want to see a larger variety of keywords.
2) The Broad search count should only be used as a guideline to see which keywords are more popular than others. Google no longer shows the Exact search count that would tell use exactly how often each keyword phrase was used each month.

8. Then click on the blue box that says GET IDEAS.

You will then see 2 tabs. The first one AD GROUP IDEAS gives you keyword phrases and their average monthly searches and subcategories. The second one KEYWORD IDEAS show you all the ideas you entered and a general monthly search averages.

Don't worry about the Competition (low, medium, high) as it only pertains to businesses paying for Google ads.

Also up at the top of the page you will see your product or service ideas (all the ideas you entered for your item(s). To the right you can MODIFY SEARCH. When you click on that, it will bring you back to your original ideas so you can eliminate or add more ideas.

I hope this helps everyone with their SEO.

Thanks this is so helpful. Please many of my keywords I have been using only pull about 20 searches or less on google but they are specific to my items, and very relevant. I am struggling with using broad terms or specific terms.
Example
repurposed scarf is 0 searches
but repurposed is......(oodles I've forgotten the amount).
does that mean I don't used repurposed scarf as my keywords?
Also, some things that I am sure are much more frequently searched on etsy are perhaps very infrequently searched for on google. I would imagine that 'repurposed scarf' would be more common on etsy, than google(about 2400 items come up on etsy). Do I try to keep etsy happy or google? Thank you so much

Deborah,

Your listing title should have at least 2 long tail keywords and 2 general keywords. What people use to search on Etsy will be the same as Google. Repurposed scarf would not be a keyword I would use in my listing title since it has 0 searches. Is this a scarf that has been repurposed into something different or the other way around? Whereas a t shirt scarf sounds like a t shirt recycled into a scarf. Be careful on the way you use your words. For example a pendant scarf is different than a scarf pendant. What is your shop name. I will try to take a look at it and see if I can help.

Thanks Mary! Sorry, what do you mean by 'long tail' keywords? Do you mean for eg red bohemian scarf or blue statement necklace?
With the repurposed scarf, I make my scarves from cut up tea towels, vintage remnants, tablecloths etc hence the description repurposed scarf. Another term i would feel applies to my scarves would be 'upcycled scarf' My shop is FlotsamandJetsum. Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Thank you.

Deborah-

You have the right idea. A long tail keyword is usually 3 or more words. Always check them with the Keyword Planner to see if they are keywords people are using for search.

I'm really stumped on this Mary as I find that many of my long tail tags have incredibly few searches. People love my stuff if they find it, I think perhaps some just don't know it exists to search for it, eg do people know that you can make scarves from doilies and they are incredible? Will they not just search for womens scarf? I am experimenting with broader keywords and checking them on the Adwords Keyword planner but I need to go through all my listings because my traffic is just too small to generate sales. It seemed to be working fine last year but the last 4 months have been dead as a doorpost. I guess I can only try the broader keywords and see how it goes. Thanks for all these tips and your time on this team's pages.

Just a thought Mary, can you use too many tags as meta data on your photos? And do you just tag your first listing photo or all of them? Currently I tag and title all listing photos. thank you.
