I recognize that many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner So I decided to give a tutorial. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your titles, but also for your tags.

1. Make an Google account (it's free) or sign in f you already have one.
2. Go to the TOOL tab and drop down to KEYWORD PLANNER
3. Go to SEARCH FOR NEW KEYWORD AND GROUP IDEAS
4 Go down to the third box that says PRODUCT CATEGORY and put in your product or follow the subcategories.
5. Go to the first box YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE and enter in any ideas you have for your item. You must hit enter after each idea.
6. Go to TARGETING and click on Google if you want Google and Search Partners
7. OPTIONAL:Then go to the gray box that says KEYWORD OPTIONS and click on the pencil icon. Turn on the top option that says "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms".
USE THIS FLAG: 1) when you want to only see suggestions very close to the keywords you entered. Do not check this flag if you want to see a larger variety of keywords.
2) The Broad search count should only be used as a guideline to see which keywords are more popular than others. Google no longer shows the Exact search count that would tell use exactly how often each keyword phrase was used each month.

8. Then click on the blue box that says GET IDEAS.

You will then see 2 tabs. The first one AD GROUP IDEAS gives you keyword phrases and their average monthly searches and subcategories. The second one KEYWORD IDEAS show you all the ideas you entered and a general monthly search averages.

Don't worry about the Competition (low, medium, high) as it only pertains to businesses paying for Google ads.

Also up at the top of the page you will see your product or service ideas (all the ideas you entered for your item(s). To the right you can MODIFY SEARCH. When you click on that, it will bring you back to your original ideas so you can eliminate or add more ideas.

I hope this helps everyone with their SEO.

bookmarking this in the hopes that I can wrap my feeble brain around it later. I still don't quite understand whether it's GOOD to use the keywords that have a lot of hits in Google Adwords or BAD to use those ones.

Example:
etsy art -- 100,000+ returns
animal art -- 1200 returns

Which one should I use??

The more specific the better. Animal Art is better because it's more specific and not as broad of a search term.

Very helpful thanks a million. I have a question.

Since I'm targeting etsy shoppers, wouldn't it be better if I write www.etsy.com in the section where it asks for the URL???

Why would you want to be just targeting Etsy shoppers? When you think about it, the search engines have shoppers from more than just Etsy. Don't you want those shoppers as well? There's a lot more fish in the ocean (search engine shoppers) than in a small lake (Etsy shoppers). That is why you don't want to put in the URL. You want to target as many possible shoppers as you can with specific keywords.

You do not have to set a daily budget on Google Adwords. Look closely and you will see a note that this optional.

Google Adwords keyword planner was created for Google Advertisers, Anyone can sign up for Google Adwords and use the keyword planner without ever running any Google Ads they create,

Hello! This is an incredibly helpful thread, I didn't even know how little I knew. I signed up and am on the keyword planner and got numbers on my key words without issue, my question now is, do I just use them all and make a rather wild looking title? I am starting with a copper kettle- should I make the title "Vintage Copper Brass Teapot Tea Pot Tea set Coffee Pot Tagus Made in Portugal" and then use the same words in the description and tags? It seems a little off putting to a browser... Thank you for all your help!

Why is using more than 3 to 4 keyword phrases in your title not seen as maximizing your SEO? Shouldn't one use all of the 140 characters Etsy gives you for the title of an item?

Sandy,

Why don't you ask this in this in the discussion and questions forum?

I believe the answer is because the first 80 characters are the ones people see and so they are the most important.

I figured it out- you have to create an 'ad campaign' whether you want one or not in order to get to the screen with the tools tab. I got a list of keywords that were completely useless and not relevant at all. How disappointing.

Sini,

It is still free to use. You do have to sign in though. You also may have to go through the actions for a paid account and then right before the very last step you suspend the account. At least, that's what I think Mary said you have to do. Then it should work for you.

Thank you Mary and EVERYONE who posted here. I learned and actually understand more about SEO than ever before. I successfully did the Google Adwords Keywords Search!!! I know there is so much more to learn. But at least I don't feel overwhelmed - I am so HAPPY I could cry!

I have a clarifying question (and I read this thread 3 times over before asking). It has to do with deciding which keywords to choose. The key points I gleamed from reading this post are:
- Keyword phrases 3 - 4 words long are best, and the more specific the better.
- When deciding between 2 keyword phrases, 1 pluralized, i not pluralized, choose the one that is more popular
- Someone suggested keywords with at least 10 hits per day (average monthly searches / 30); someone also suggested (I think) no more than 8000 per day.

Am I understand the range correctly? Minimum 10 and maximum 8000 per day is the "sweet spot"? Thank you!

Re: How to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Cheryl,

The best way to think about and use keyword phrases is to describe them using multiple keywords. Make sure make sure your item can be searched in the biggest pool possible, but also in the best pool of keywords. For example, the keyword phrase: BLACK CLUTCH PURSE can be broken down to the following, and these are the average monthly searches based on a broad base search on Google Adwords.

Black Clutch 9900
clutch purse 33,100
black clutch purse 3600

So if someone is searching for this type of purse, your item would be in the search pool whenever any one of these keyword phrases was being used. However, your item is more likely to be found when using the search term "black clutch purse" because it most likely describes your item.

So whether it has ten daily searches or 8,000, it's more about how specific you can be so your item can be found using 2-4 keywords that make a phrase and people are using. Does this make sense? I hope so. Here's something that may help you.
