HOW TO PUNCTUATE LISTING TITLES FOR BEST SEO!
There seem to be a lot of discussions going on lately about how to punctuate product listing titles for best SEO. It’s important, since if you don’t get it right, your listings might disappear from search results. Here are some quick tips. Keep this guide on hand for future reference!

AT LEAST ONE SPACE BETWEEN PHRASES
Make sure to leave at least one space between keyword phrases.

That’s really all you need to know. Wasn’t that simple?

In fact, you can use pretty much any punctuation mark you like between phrases, as long as you follow the rule above. I have my personal preferences, but the choice doesn’t affect SEO in the slightest.

INSIDER SECRET #1
For good SEO, you actually don’t need any punctuation at all, just spaces between words. So why do we put in hyphens, slashes or something else? So the title will be readable. A long string of words is uncomfortable for customers, who want to be able to get the facts at a glance.

INSIDER SECRET #2
Do you need capital letters at the beginning of every word in your title? Doesn’t matter for SEO. But for readability, it looks good. I prefer it. The most important thing, though, is consistency. All your titles should use the same punctuation and the same approach to capital letters.

Here are some examples. Note: The keyword phrases are entirely fictional, for sample purposes only, and don’t reflect actual SEO research.

HYPHEN
---Space on both sides (my preference)
“Red Crystal Bead Earrings - Red Beaded Earrings - Swarovski Crystal Earrings”

---Space on one side only (works fine for SEO)
“Red Crystal Bead Earrings- Red Beaded Earrings- Swarovski Crystal Earrings”

---No space (avoid, please)
“Red Crystal Bead Earrings-Red Beaded Earrings-Swarovski Crystal Earrings”

The hyphens in hyphenated words will be removed, so in the above example, “Earrings-Red” will be seen as “earringsred,” which is gibberish and won’t help you at all with SEO.

COMMA
---Space on one side, after the comma (best choice)
“Organic Cotton Baby Blanket, Organic Newborn Wrap, Cotton Blanket.”

---Space on one side, before the comma (not recommended)
“Organic Cotton Baby Blanket ,Organic Newborn Wrap ,Cotton Blanket.”

This is fine for SEO, but isn’t correct English punctuation and might look like a mistake to customers.

---No space (avoid, please)
“Organic Cotton Baby Blanket,Organic Newborn Wrap,Cotton Blanket.”

(See note about HYPHENS above.)

SLASH ( / ) or PIPE ( | )
---Space on both sides (best choice)
“Printable Holiday Greeting Cards / Downloadable Holiday Cards / Special Occasion Cards.”
“Printable Holiday Greeting Cards | Downloadable Holiday Cards | Special Occasion Cards.”

---Space on one side only (not recommended)
“Printable Holiday Greeting Cards/ Downloadable Holiday Cards/ Special Occasion Cards.”
“Printable Holiday Greeting Cards| Downloadable Holiday Cards| Special Occasion Cards.”

I don’t think these look right, but use your judgment. This wouldn't hurt your SEO.

DOUBLE SLASH ( // ) or DOUBLE PIPE ( || )
Not recommended. These take up unnecessary character space, aren’t particularly attractive and make it more difficult for customers to read the title easily.

OTHER CHARACTERS (Any “fun” characters from the keyboard)
Not recommended. They don’t look professional, and also distract customers from the items they’re viewing.

NO PUNCTUATION (Avoid)
As mentioned above (Insider Secret #1), it's best to have some sort of punctuation, rather than just a string of words.

Avoid, please: "Ceramic Coffee Mug Birthday Mug Coffee Lovers Gift."

Re: How to Punctuate Listing Titles for SEO!

Patty: Interesting question. I don't have any information on that particular issue. Do buyers generally search on your shop name? In other words, is your shop well known by name? Normally, customers will search using terms related to the item they're looking for, so in that case your items will show up based on how good your SEO is. The pages you're looking at won't be seen by most customers. If you do have a famous shop, and would like to find out more about this issue, then you could start a thread to ask Mary W., who might know something more. Are you in her FB group, the SEO Salon? You could ask there, also. Thanks for your question!

Re: How to Punctuate Listing Titles for SEO!

Hi Barbara- thanks for your quick response! My shop is not known at all which is why it's very important that my items show up in search. JJ Jonette Jewelry is a very niche market- there are only about 3500 items in the search at any given time. Buyers looking for JJ Jonette usually know exactly what they are looking for and will type in that search term. Sometimes I optimize my pins for animals - like "cat lover" "dog lover" "dachsund" or people like "grandma" "mom" etc.

But most of the time I make sure to have the JJ Jonette in the beginning of the title because that's how people search.

Every time I do the search myself I see the exact same pieces in the exact same pages! Meanwhile I have listed many, many new items that I would like to be seen.

The only way buyers will see the newer items is if they search by recency, not the default search which is relevancy.

Patty: Thanks for the clarification. In that case, this would be a question for Mary. Best way to get some input is to ask in her FB group. I don't have the link handy at the moment, but it's listed on the main page of this team, in the lefthand column. Best of luck!

Bless you. As a seller, I already do this; as a buyer/browser, the "not recommended" examples drive me to distraction.

Re: How to Punctuate Listing Titles for SEO!

Thank you for clarifying this. I agree with you totally on all this and I am glad you addressed it! :) It drives me crazy too (as a buyer) on some of the "not to do's" when I see them in shops.

Re: How to Punctuate Listing Titles for SEO!

Question I have many similar items and repeat words like vintage dress cocktail dress ect each item does have some differences but the base keywords don't. Does this negatively impact the store?

Re: How to Punctuate Listing Titles for SEO!

Buffalo Gal: If you have a good SEO phrase that has tested well and is working for you, then it's fine to keep the same phrase in multiple listing titles. You can also repeat the same phrase in all the descriptions. (The descriptions overall should be somewhat different from each other, so that they don't look identical to search engines. Keep the phrases, but change up the other wording in each description.) It's OK for the titles to be similar. Hope that helps!

Sherri: Looks spammy to me, but you might consider posting your question in the forums. Or, you can start a thread here, and then other team members can see it and respond. Unfortunately, I don't have any information about this sort of thing. Maybe others will know if you create a new thread. Good luck!

Re: How to Punctuate Listing Titles for SEO!

Solid information, thanks for answer one part of my questions. Not sure if its good to ask here, but I'll proceed and delete if inappropriate. So, when I search "hand made soap" for example, my Etsy page doesn't come up in the first hundred of pages... NOT one listing. However, if I do the same for google, I find my website. So google likes my keywords better than Etsy? I'm focusing more efforts on my Etsy shop than I do on my website, although I have the benefit of blogs on my site. Yikes. So lost...

So glad to have found this team!
I have already started writing titles of new listings this way and will be changing old ones up as they renew or in chunks as I have time.

All threads seem to have a wealth of how to information which is exactly what this newbie needs!!
