Attributes for an item: Help or limiting?

Someone told me that if you specify attributes for an item, it may actually limit that item in searches (the Who, Occassion, etc. choices).

But according to EtsyShoptimizer, it's very important...but of course they would.

Anyone have any insight? or seen benefits/negatives?

The last I heard, Etsy is not even using these attributes yet. Have you ever seen a search that asks for this information?

I would not worry about it one way or the other.
