Canada Post work stoppage 2016

Jump to solution
This is the official thread for info on the Canada Post work stoppage that is now almost certain to happen, given that Canada Post has given notice for July 8:
https://www.canadapost.ca/web/en/blogs/announcements/details.page?article=2016/07/05/canada_post_tak...

It is therefore possible that all employees will be locked out or on strike as of Friday.

Please use this thread for information on the labour dispute including the status of negotiations, and any info regarding how Etsy is treating complaints of non-delivery (or other issues that may arise). I will highlight key posts as required.

The thread for shipping alternatives to Canada Post is here:
https://www.etsy.com/teams/7654/etsy-international/discuss/17821085

Please do not use this thread to blame anyone for this work stoppage, complain about politics, call out other sellers etc. You are welcome to start those threads elsewhere :)

"Strike activities" have been announced, to commence on Monday:
http://www.cupw.ca/en/alert-4-%E2%80%93-strike-activities

Basically, no overtime if your province is on "strike" rotation that day. Everyone else works normal hours.

That is about as mild as it gets, I think :) Let us hope that Canada Post will promise not to lock them out as long as that is all they do!

Canada Post has extended their notice to Monday now, to give the union time to agree to binding arbitration:
https://www.canadapost.ca/web/en/blogs/announcements/details.page?article=2016/07/06/canada_post_pre...
this could mean normal mail service on Friday but it is not clear what the union will do. Earlier in the day they filed an unfair labour practice complaint against CP:

CP agrees to 30 day cooling off but says that binding arbitration must follow the 30 days if no agreement reached:

So does this mean we should go ahead and mail packages? ...or do both parties still have to agree on the 30 day cooling off period?

Union has not yet responded to the demand for binding arbitration, but they already rejected it yesterday so I am not expecting a change there.

I shipped again this morning, non-Canadian orders only. They should all be out of the country by Sunday night when the lockout kicks in.

Re: Canada Post work stoppage 2016

The union posted this today:
http://www.cupw.ca/en/labour-code-and-strikes

"Based on the provisions of the Canada Labour Code, there are three possible options available to us.

The parties could agree in writing to extend the 60-day period that the strike vote is valid for. This would allow negotiations to continue and we would retain our right to strike. Should CPC not agree to extend the period, then we may have no other choice than to issue a 72-hour notice of strike action on or before August 25, 2016.

If we do not use one of the above options by August 25th, then our strike vote mandate is no longer valid and we would have to hold another strike vote to have the ability to issue a 72-hour notice of strike action."

Hmm, not sure if this is good news or not - union has cancelled the press conference until further notice. No strike call just yet:

I wish they would decide once and for all ~ this back + forth is just not good for small business owners who depend upon CP for their shipping:(

Thanks for keeping on top of things for all of us!!

you are welcome!

Special mediator to be appointed by government:

but that does not really say anything about what will happen in the next few days.

this will not yet be a full strike action however, & they are willing to halt it if CP agrees to more time.

don't forget that this now gives the company the legal right to lock them out

Once the strike actually starts, no notice is required by either side for any escalation, is how I read this:
