Still processing

I just had a strange thing happen with a direct checkout payment. I received a notification from etsy that a purchase had been made and that the payment was being processed and not to ship until I received notification that all was processed.

Never had this happen before, does anyone know what's up?

Thanks, Jodi

Re: Still processing

I believe Etsy sends that message when a buyers credit card hasn't cleared the sale yet. I am sure all will be fine - sometimes it just takes a little longer. My first DC sale was that way and the one I had this week went through immediately.

Re: Still processing

I had one that way a few weeks ago. It took it almost 36 hours to clear. I worried about it, but everything turned out fine. Most go through immediately, but sometimes it takes a bit longer for credit card transactions to clear.

Re: Still processing

I don't understand this and also find it strange. If I am at a show and take a cc through square or the paypal app, I know within a few seconds if that card is good. Think about it, when you purchase anything in a store and use your cc, there is no wait for it to clear. What's with this etsy cc wait?

Re: Still processing

I just had the same thing happen right now with a DC purchase. On my sold page, above all the orders I have that haven't shipped yet is one line that says "you have orders that are still being processed" and "view now" and when I click there it takes me to another order that says something about the order hasn't processed yet, and not to ship it yet. It's like it's in limbo........ Either the card is good or not, I don't understand this. Why even notify me until everything goes through ok and is ready to ship? I usually notify my customers pretty quickly when their order comes through letting them know when and how it will ship, so I don't know what to do with this one.

Re: Still processing

Ok, now that order is in the list with my other orders that haven't shipped yet. Must be whatever was wrong with the card or order was corrected?

Re: Still processing

@Mary Nedry--if you look at the invoice it will state not paid if it hasn't cleared yet.

In general:

When an order is delayed...it isn't something wrong, necessarily.

CC processors can check validity of cards in a bunch of different ways.

It is similar to how one can set fraud filters in PayPal. You can have it reject transactions outright, let everything through, OR have a payment pending until you can decide whether you want to approve it or not.

I have had orders that went to pending through my PayPal filters and I ended up approving all of them. Sometimes after contacting the buyer directly, sometimes just making a judgement call on my own.

PayPal has it's own set of filters and will pend orders too. I have had that happen a few times...once they cancelled the order all together because they said it was fraudulent. Most times it pends 24 hrs and goes through.

Basically, Etsy CC processing has some parameters in place that will pend a payment. Probably goes through a bit more thorough check and then if it passes it clears, if it doesn't pass then the order is "undone".

An example may be when someone wants the purchase sent to somewhere other than the billing address of the CC or when the name it is being shipped to is different than the name on the card. Both could be perfectly legitimate but may need a more detailed check to be sure it's not fraud.

Pending CC transactions that need a few more checks generally keeps the rates lower for a merchant.
