How long does it take for a refund to be processed?

A buyer changed her mind about an order, and I agreed to cancel it for her before it shipped (it was a direct checkout order). I issued a refund, and it shows up in pink on my order details page saying there are pending cancellations, but I am wondering just how long it will be pending? Does this mean that her refund has not gone through yet?
