As far as the outcome, Britain has weathered a storm or two in it's existence, lets remember we are not talking about a young country like Estonia. The entire UK did not decide to leave the EU, just Britain. I think it's people with it's Parliament will untangle this mess.
ONE day after the decision was made by the people they discovered that quite simply they were lied to by the "leave" campaign because frankly the "leave" campaign had no idea that brits would actually vote yes. That big bus ad about savings going to health programs was a lie.
The immigration promise was a lie as well.

First a sudden decease in water pressure across the US as Americas were suddenly violently sick to their stomachs, followed by a massive headache when the stock market tanks and people see the 401 k and retirement portfolios disappear before their eyes. He said "Brexit was all due his awakening of people in the US that so many people here "took back their country."". ( Geography is not his thing, Scots Voted NO and he was in Scotland saying this, but hey, ya know everything happens because he said or did it first)
Fortunately many US people also saw the crash and the immediate buyers remorse and said .. Oh no this will not happen here in Nov.
The EU was a product of WW2 because it was felt that since countries in Europe had started 2 world wars in less than 25 years, maybe they better start to be friends and help each other rebuild after the tragic devastation of so much of all of Europe. Winston Churchill actually started the conversation. Britain was not accepted until the 70's because France was so opposed to Britain becoming a member. At least that is what I remember from school.
