My good friend moved to Nashville and has been living there for a couple of years. This is his latest Facebook update:

On the airplane today i sat next to a nice lady. she was older and a piano teacher, she tried to start both political and religious conversation with me, both of which i thwarted with neutral answers that ended the conversation, like comparing the political debates to sports, and then stating that i don't like sports.

but then, as we were descending into nashville i leaned over to her ear and asked,
"have you heard of the movie freaky friday? if mitt romney and barack obama were to switch bodies, what do you think the first thing mitt would do realizing he was in obama's body?"

she initially tried to convince me that she was unable to answer, but i probed her imagination and finally she said,
"the first thing i would do would be to change the color of my skin."

i was amazed.

Re: Racism

Like ideology, racism is a learned trait. People aren't born liberals. They aren't born racist. Most learn these in the home, from their parents, some from their peers. Granted (like Crazy,) some will eventually decide that their views on race, politics, religion, etc., does not mesh with their parents'...but, that really isn't the "norm."

To totally lump all mormons, blacks, whites, hispanics, jews, etc. into their own little cubbie with a title is completely, and insanely, ignorant.

"People arent born liberals. They arent born racist."

There is an omission in that sentence that speaks volumes.

Oh the history of racism in the Mormon church, let me make sure I have this right. Because that historically true fact is brought up, you are saying that we are lumping all people of one religion into a little cubbie which makes us insane and ignorant?

If I mentioned that our country has a history of owning slaves and shooting the Original Americans would try to twist that into me calling all Americans racist?

If you are lumping all mormons into the same cubbie, then, yes, I would say you are insanely ignorant. I'm well aware that 50 years ago, the mormon church did not want blacks in their church. I'm also aware that Mitt Romney's father opposed that doctrine, even marching with civil rights groups. I'm also aware that the number of black mormons has grown quite a bit over the past few decades.

Lumping all people of any sex, race, religion, ideology, profession, yada, yada, yada...is complete lunacy. That's comparable to saying that, because of the high incidence of black men shunning their paternal responsibilities, ALL black men are dead-beat dads. Wouldn't you call that a completely ignorant statement? I would!

Re: Racism

having black skin isn't the same thing as being indoctrinated into a religion that teaches you that having one drop of blood in you (what is it? cain's blood that is black?) means that you are of the devil and destined to go to hell. or something.

Re: Racism

Yes, it is interesting...George Romney went against his church to embrace civil rightrs...but, some would still throw him into that cubbie with all other mormons of that time period.

Did somebody in this thread say all Mormons were racist or did someone mention the history of racism in the Mormon church?

Re: Racism

So, what is your basis for labeling Mitt Romney a racist? One of my mother's favorite sayings is, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

Re: Racism

Funny. Potato mentioned a woman's remarks, I mentioned a woman's remarks, Crazy mentioned Romneys demographics, There was mention of the history or racism in the Mormon church.

Somehow your reading comprehension turned this into all Mormons and Romney are racist. Which was never said.

Who is your mother voting for?

And do you believe that the president must accept full responsibility for the things that happen on his watch? You stated it, but you wont hold yourself accountable to that statement when pressed.

Re: Racism

Just to be clear, I am calling Romney an out of touch sexist homophobic uncaring liar.
But racist, I have seen no evidence of that.
The woman I mentioned in the drs office. Yes. Racist.

Re: Racism

i can't say what romney really believes. a lot of people profess one thing in order to get along in society but behind closed doors it's another thing. i can't tell you what the truth is with romney.

all i know is that until, i think it was, 1978 blacks were excluded from mormon hierarchy because their *race* was considered either imperfect in the eyes of god, or insufficiently mature to be trusted, or "one drop of black blood" made them evil. or something.

it's not like pretty much any other religion doesn't have its racist ideology at some point, but this particular one was a revelation by god unto the person who founded the religion and a lot of other leaders of mormonism since then. i know they are trying to reform their religion and i think that is for the best. but, 1978 wasn't that long ago.
