Product Photography Lighting

As you can see, if you check out my shop, I have been taking all my product pictures outside. Most of my items are larger and either sit on a small table or hang on a dress form.

While Santa Barbara has great weather for shooting outside year round, I am often trying to take photos after work around 5 or 6 pm, which does not work during winter and I would also really like to improve the quality of my photos. I would love to move my photography inside my rather dark apartment and don't know what kind of lights to purchase.

My apartment has white walls, which I think would work well as a backdrop, using the same small table and dress form. I just don't know what kind of continuous lights I should get. What is the difference between soft box lights and umbrella lights and which would work better in an apartment with very little natural light? How many lights do I need? Is an overhead boom light necessary?

Any recommendations on lighting kits and preferred brands would be helpful as well. Here are a few of the items I've been looking at:

Thank you very much for any input!

Re: Product Photography Lighting

Any of those 3 choices will work well for you.

I use the lighting in your second link. 3 lights is enough. You don't need an over head boom.

You can upgrade those bulbs to higher wattage bulbs for little cost. I would upgrade to 85 watt bulbs.

The white walls will help reflect the light. GET A TRIPOD if you don't already have one.
The reason why is, those bulbs are not that bright and you will have to use a slower shudder speed if you want a wide depth of field at the same time.

If you use a tripod you should get super sharp pictures no matter how slow your shudder speed is.
