Photo Feedback

I've been working on my product shots alot lately and I've come far but I definitely know there's still room for improvement. I use a portable light box to take most of my shots but I still always have to use editing software to brighten the pictures.

The photos on this recent necklace for example is something I've been struggling with. http://www.etsy.com/listing/68086736/hundreds-of-sparkling-beads-necklace

I just can't seem to get the beads to sparkle and pop in the picture the way I would like them to. And there seems to be a bluish shade to the white background. Do you have any suggestions?

Any other feedback is more then welcome!

Re: Photo Feedback

Hi, Love your shop! Beautiful pieces.

- Pop. add bright points and sparkle in your jewelry and translucent beads to have some of that to show through.

2 ways:

1) one light source on item about 14 inches away (up to 100 watt incand. bright).

2) background.

1) Light Source
- i would have just one light source (link for daylight balanced bulbs at bottom of page) on your item. use a full spectrum bulb and diffusion (you can use white tissue paper in front of bulb to diffuse the light.

- place the light at a 45 degree to a 90 angle (side lighting) to the jewelry piece you are photographing.

- have a white bounce card (big white card stock board) on the on the opposite side of the light, sandwiching the jewelry piece between the light and the bounce card.

this will give a varied light from one side to the other creating a greater chiarascuro effect and also accentuating sparkle.

you can adjust to get the best lighting look through experimenting.
-------------

2) Background

- You have silver jewelry, some oxidized, others not. You tend to have shiny pieces.

2 things:
1) contrast shiny objects with a matte background
2) neutral color background

1) matte backgrounds could include slate, rag/newsprint/old paper without the processed shiny coat, ceramic with a matte finish.

This would create a differentiation in surface between the background and the object.

2) changing background color in conjunction with having it matte adds to the contrast.

your regular silver and light stone pieces might work well with a matt grey background. this can be anything from distressed wood to ceramic to paper.

for your darker pieces you might want a lighter background.
