Light box problems

I've recently upgraded from a DIY lightbox (out of a paper box and white paper) that i used with a regular daylight bulb, unfiltered (positioned in front), to this light tent setup: http://www.amazon.com/SP200-Photo-Studio-In-Box/dp/B000PC4A0O/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1358182516&sr=8...

I'm having difficulty getting bright pictures with this new setup (same camera).

Old picture with DIY light box:

New picture with new light tent:

The newer one also required extra processing to get it to where it is now, which still looks bad to me. (Both are processed using PicMonkey, mostly just upping the brightness)

Any idea what the culprit is? Camera settings, lights, etc? Any tips on getting better light tent pictures?

My camera: Nikon L810
ISO: auto
White balance: flourescent
I bumped exposure compensation up to about 1.7 for this, but it didn't make much difference.
