Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

I noticed that posting quality photos of models wearing the goodies helps to get more hearts, but that doesn't always lead to sales... So what does?

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

Hi there
I am new to the team ~ I have been using this tool to make sure I have the best adwords (tag words) to list on each item.
It is free and easy to use. Maybe this will help create better tag words which will help more people to find your shop.....

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

I think the best marketing is to offer excellent customer service, a happy customer & word of mouth mean the most to me. Make a product you are proud of, answer convos asap, write thank you emails & hand-write a thank you with their name on their invoice in the package. Make it personal, I think that is what people shop on Etsy for.

Brand yourself, for example, my biz card & banner have pink & brown polka dots, I keep that look going when I wrap my customer's purchases in matching pretty tissue paper & ribbons. I usually tuck in a little extra something or offer them a discount, etc. on their next order. I pack everything carefully in boxes & ship that day. I also keep my eye on the tracking #s for the packages, so if the postal service misplaces a package for a day or two (it's happened:() I can give my customer a heads up & let them know I called about it & it's now back on track. When I'm in craft shows, my table covers, signs, etc. all match.

I think that if someone is happy with their purchase they will sing your praises, I know I do when I buy something! I think the biggest challenge is marketing to get people outside of Etsy to come to our shops. I make things for babies & little girls, so I've gone to a few dance schools, nursery schools, etc. & some have let me set up a table & sell there. I donate 10% of what I sell back to the school, so it is a fundraiser for them. Try to get in front of your audience. Maybe you make things for pets? Try this approach at the local ASPA. I've also given products to friends to give as gifts.

I am still trying to find the best way to get the word out organically as well as thru the computer. Not sure if I should do mailings, etc. I'm learning as I go, but I really believe going the extra mile for a customer really impresses them.

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

Thank you, ThatsAdorableLLC, for a great advice. I agree with you! The only problem here is that in order to impress your customers, you need them to buy something from you. However, this appears to be the biggest challenge out there for Etsy sellers. I guess we all have to keep trying! :)

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

There are so many nice items it's very hard to choose. I'm pretty sure everyone is doing their best to please customers, I guess we just need visibility.

Thanks Patty for good advices.

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

Natalja,

Have you tried displaying your items somewhere locally where you live? You make lovely, unique girls dresses. Perhaps if you took them to a nursery school, Goddard School, etc. some of the Moms might be interested. You could hand out discount coupons for them to use later in your Etsy shop, maybe a % off or free shipping/delivery. Also offering to donate a portion of your proceeds for the day you sell at the school back to the school. This way they can use it as they see fit, so it is a win-win for both of you. While you're there have flyers, etc. advertising your Etsy shop. Once they see your pretty dresses in person, they'll want to check out your Etsy shop for more colors, sizes, etc. It can't hurt. Just writing this as an example, or how about a PTO meeting at your local school? The PTOs can always use a donation & it gives the Moms the opportunity to see your unique creations, the coupons are the incentive for them to purchase on Etsy. Just a thought:) I'm no expert, but this has helped me a little. Good luck to everybody!

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

Has anyone looked into a SCORE chapter in your area? They give free advice & run free seminars in libraries, community colleges, etc. They are current and/or retired successful executives and business owners. They have seminars on using Social Media, marketing, accounting, designing websites, etc. Best of all, it's FREE:) They are all over the U.S., also check out the Small Business Adminstration & your local chamber of commerce, they hold networking events

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

I found that when you keep renewing your items then you can get more attention and interest. People may not know how to find our shop but if you keep yourself on the first search page than you are easy to spot. I also tried the impressions but it didn't work for me but maybe for someone not making children's clothes it could help.....

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

I have found that traditional marketing strategies do not work on the internet. Yes, increasing your consumer base thru offline visibility (sales/shows/ stores/galleries) is profitable, but does not always lead to online sales. The 'live' consumer is more apt to make a purchase, as they are there in the now, where as online consumers can just mark the item as a favorite and view it to buy some day later, which can turn out to be never. There isn't that pressing need of 'got to buy it now'. Usually 'live' consumers are more 'instant gratification' consumers and advert web sales because they do not want to wait for an item, are unable to use a computer to order items, or have no time to be 'looking on line' for items, or want to know 'exactly what they are getting'..
Knowing exactly what you are getting helps to make the sale. This can start with a very nice picture, one that initially grasps the attention of a consumer, but one which also shows detail. An excellent description is also appropriate. Obviously I am not an expert on online marketing visibility, as one can tell from the actual sales in my store. When I did take marketing in undegrad we did not learn marketing for the web. To me it seems a lot harder to assess what is selling, and why on the web. Why did a consumer come to your store, why did they purchase, what search brought them there, how was your store visible, how can you encourage them to return? These are the questions every store owner must ask and answer to be a successful seller.

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

Yes, they are definitely different! But if you can get a customer offline (craftshow, fund raiser, etc.) & they like your items there is a good chance that they will want to continue to shop with you online in your Etsy shop. I've actually had this happen with 5 or 6 customers that are repeat buyers & have referred others. At least you can begin to establish a following this way. How many times have we all bought something we loved & told everyone we knew where to get it & why we love it? There's no guarantee ever, but I think the key is to drive traffic to Etsy by promoting yourself off the site, There are SO many shops here on Etsy it is so hard to stand out. Take any opportunity to have people see & touch (& hopefully, Love!) your items. Like ordering a shirt from the Gap after you saw it in one of their stores, you already know & trust that the other color, size, etc. is similar quality. Lots to think about for sure:)

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

Yes, attracting customers offline is a great idea. Honestly, I sell more offline than online. Maybe because I have much more experience doing it offline and because people like to be able to touch and try thing on. I'm still learning the ropes of selling online though. Thanks all for your great ideas on how to better do it. :)

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

There is some great advice in here. Thanks Thatsadorablellc and godessofthecosmos. I am definitely struggling to make more sales. Sometimes i wonder if I don't add new items frequently enough. I think one of my main problems is visibility. When I search for my items on etsy, it takes quite a few pages to find them. By that point my guess is most customers already found what they are looking for or lost interest. So I am still trying to figure out the best tags, titles etc to use.

Re: Creative Marketing Ideas

I think having a good product, great photography, and excellent customer service will attract loyal repeat customers. If you're new, it just may take a while for them to find you, but cream always rises to the top!!
