Square now Process' Payments with Offline Mode

This is what I have been wanting since I first started using Square in 2010. Thia past week I have been researching mobile hot spots to carry with me to shows. I have one show (Westmoreland Arts and Festival, PA) where I have the hardest time getting a cell signal so I figured a mobile hot spot would solve the problem. Now I do not have to worry about it...

I just saw that the other day and was so excited. Let us know how it works out for you. I have one show I do that's in the middle of nowhere, in the woods. Hardly anyone has cell reception and my 3G on my ipad gave me nothing. Last fall I used regular credit card slips that I handwrote and typed in later when I got home. Processing them offline with Square will save me so much time and prevent mistakes.

The only problem is the same problem I used to have before the advent of Square. Offline payments don't let you know if the card is declined, so make sure you get the person's contact info. I love Square and get tons of extra sales because I take cards at outdoor events. I get about 75% card sales so it's really important! The offline payments option saved my bacon this week since the event's wi-fi was down.

I have a friend who work in credit card fraud. He told me that the chance of getting fraudulent card at an art fair or craft show is preety slim. The folks using fraudulent cards are more interested in big ticket items. It like checks, I have been doing shows since 1983 and i have had two bad checks in all those years. Besides I had the same issue using a wireless system when my merchant account was with chase. They called it store and forward. You still had the same risk but it beats not being PCI compliant and being fined.

Ooh, I've been so very interested in Square, but data plans aren't very affordable. One step closer to possibility!

Thanks for the information, I may try it at the next show that I don't have service at....I did try to run a test of it here at home (even putting my phone on airplane mode-to block on-line service) but couldn't find how to switch it over.(I followed the steps for android from their site) Doesn't square update automatically as needed? or am I missing a step?

Sqaure sends updates but you need to start the update.

Is the fee higher if you process offline? I know when you type versus swipe the fee is higher. Just wondering if offline charges a higher fee.

I have used it already and it works just fine. All you do is engage the app when you have service again and it uploads all the sales.

The fee is the same so long as younswipe the card. If you enter it manually then it is more just as if you were online.

I usually have to swipe the card several times for it to read. Does it tell you when the card has been successfully read when you're offline?

Yes it will. Go online to your account and order a new card reader. The new one works much better than the old style. Always keep a spare with you.

I'm glad to hear you've used it already! I know I have one big show in the fall where this will be needed and will be much easier than writing our cc slips. Though I'll still take them with me just in case.
