Square beware!

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem...a customer wanted to buy a bracelet but only if I could take a credit card...I excitedly answered yes! She purchased an $80 piece and the sale was approved by square..she signed and walked away smiling wearing my beautiful creation. About 15 minutes later I checked my email for confirmation as I always do and found out the woman had cancelled her payment to me! I contacted square and they said there was nothing they could do...they were only a go between customer and bank...no address, no phone and only a scribbled signature...I lost $80 to this scam artist...lesson learned the hard way...always get some sort of Id phone name etc...beware of square!

Re: Square beware!

Wow, I had no idea that could happen. Good lesson for all of us who are trusting. So sorry for you though.

Re: Square beware!

Thanks for sharing. That makes me very uncomfortable. How can they cancel the transaction? I understand disputing it with the credit card company as I've dealt with that sort of thing in my professional life several times but to have the option to cancel a sale is very creepy. Was it a swipe payment or did you punch in the cc #? I personally would push back much harder with Square and create a stink. I'm going to read all of my paperwork from them again because I don't remember this being disclosed.

Re: Square beware!

Good to know. Thanks for sharing with us, but sorry that you had to go through that! I would think there would have to be a transaction number that they could trace and find out who she is - I'm guessing she's got a "record" of purchase then cancel...ugh...so frustrating. It's hard enough to get and gain business, no one has the resources for this type of scam! Please follow up here if you get any more response from Square.

Re: Square beware!

I am so sorry. Absolutely awful and very good to know for those of us who have yet to use Square. This seems like something that could easily be prevented on their part.

Re: Square beware!

That's interesting. I wonder if there is something in the email receipt that the customer can reply to and cancel through that. I may have to test this.

Re: Square beware!

This doesn't sound right - how can Square not help you - at least with contact info for the bank - you have the in-person signature. I would call them again.

Re: Square beware!

If Square is the go between the CC company and you and the customer, I don't see how they can deny a transaction that has already been approved by the CC company. It's should not be up to them to cancel a transaction. I would do a little more research if I were you.

Re: Square beware!

Please let us know if you find out more information. Something doesn't seem right with this (not accusing you in anyway) but I think square should be more culpable for this type of scam.

Re: Square beware!

Wow, what a crappy situation. There's got to be something more they can do. Makes me uneasy as this weekend will be my first festival using square.

It's so sad that there are people like that out there. It's the same as if they walked up, swiped it off the table and left. Sad...

Re: Square beware!

That is stealing and should be illegal - I would contact Square, and then file a police report on the woman.

Re: Square beware!

Wow, I've never heard of this happening. I'm sorry that this has happened to you. I have only used the Square a couple of times, but this makes me rethink on how I can capture at least some information from the customer in case something like this happens. I hope that you will be able to pursue it further with Square and get your money back.

Re: Square beware!

I agree with filing a police report. Square has the customer's signature stored.

Re: Square beware!

This is weird, it's usually not easy to cancel a trascation. As a customer I was charged for something I never received, I was also signed up for a monthly subscription that I never wanted and both times, it required paperwork and such on my end to cancel those transactions.
I would file a police report, it is fraud and they do take fraud seriously because the person is out there doing this to many other people.

Re: Square beware!

As someone who has dealt with credit card fraud a bunch of times, it is possible that her bank was in the processes of canceling the card when the transaction went through. We had some transactions get through after mine was canceled and the bank had to go in and manually reverse the charges. They also had some that were turned down yet should have gone through because I had made the transaction myself about an hour prior. Her card may have been stolen at that show and used right away and she canceled the card right away. Or she is just nuts. I would still contact square again and ask to speak to a supervisor. All credit card processors are a go between with the bank and the customer and dealing with this stuff is why you pay the processor a fee.

Re: Square beware!

I agree with HoldsIt. I think the card was either stolen / lost and in the process of being closed and was in the possession of the customer who knew it wasn't her card OR the customer bought a bunch of stuff on their own card and then reported it stolen / lost and had the transactions cancelled. Either way I think it has a criminal aspect to it. Hopefully this is not something that is very prevalent. I don't see anything on Square's end that allows a customer to cancel a transaction. They can dispute a charge with their credit card company but that takes time.

These last two bullet points sort of negate whatever they told you about this transaction! https://squareup.com/security

Re: Square beware!

This sounds like a stolen credit card. I had my info stolen and the bank called me about 2 transactions. I denied that they were mine and I was immediately refunded the money. I assume the merchant is out the money then for whatever was purchased. I think it is just one of the risks of accepting credit cards...I'm sorry that happened to you though.
