What is your largest challenge with working in color pencil??

I have a very hard time with white fur!!! It is so frustrating. I often feel unsure if I should use blues to render it or greys.

I think I am beginning to get the hang of black fur or hair.

What do you think??

Jodi ~ hello and welcome. I think blues and greys are absolutely the way to go in rendering white fur. Your shop is great ... love the red horse.

The biggest challenge for me has to be the tedious details, such as grass, and water.
Water does so much to the play of light and color, so you really have to have a good set of references to make sure things look right. It's crazy, but fun. ^_^

I seem to be okay with fur. Probably since I've been around animals my hole life. Plenty of memory and visual reference to draw on.

Fur can be a challenge for sure! I cover it quite extensively in my tutorials... my technique is quite different from other people's (I've been told) but the way I use pencils lends itself well to fur. Really, the most challenging parts for me are the other textures... rocks, trees, bark, etc. I love working with the animals' eyes, and therefore do a lot of close-cropped miniature artwork. :)

Christina, what is your unusual technique, in a nutshell? You do lovely work!

Jodi, I use blues, lavenders, pinks, beige, whatever I see in white fur, but mostly blues to define it.

Here's a bulldog that has a lot of white fur:

MY bugaboo with cps is BOREDOM. I dislike the initial layers, can't wait to get to the detailing!

Keeping pencils sharp is my biggest problem. I just keep drawing/coloring and forget to sharpen my pencils. Then I discover I'm not filling in the paper like I want to.

Mary ~ hello and welcome ... I know what you mean ... that nice sharp pencil point disappears so fast. My bugaboo is pencils where the color breaks off. Argh.

Angela ~ I think that's a challenge for all artists. I have to carve out time where I can sneak it in. : ) Good luck ~ Linda

Re: What is your largest challenge with working in color pencil??

I have learned several ways to spend less time on a colored pencil work, as that can drive me crazy! Putting in a background color with ground up pencil or with pastels can cut down on time. I sometimes will use ink if I have a lot of black in a piece also.

I have had a lot of trouble with my prismacolor color pencil points breaking!!! It makes me so mad, then I sharpen it and it breaks again. I feel like so much of my pencil has been wasted when that happens. They are not cheap, ya know? *lol*
