Colored pencil recommendations?

Hello!
I currently have a motley hodge podge of colored pencils from my art school days (15 years ago!), passed down from my great-grandfather (50+ years old believe it or not!), and hand-picked in art supply shops individually. Just wondering what brands people are using and what you like about them. I love the Caran d'Ache pencils but haven't sprung for an entire set yet.
Thanks!

Re: Colored pencil recommendations?

I use Prismacolors only. Definitely my favorite after trying a lot of different kinds. I use them exclusively for everything I do, including my workshops and tutorials. An example:

Re: Colored pencil recommendations?

Anybody have problems with certain Prismacolor pencils not keeping a tip? It is like the color core breaks real easy OR- was already broken. My pencils came by mail. If this is not a common problem with the brand, then it was due to the josteling and juggling during transit?

Re: Colored pencil recommendations?

Baron ~ I have had problems with the Prismacolor pencil cores breaking off ... only occasionally, but so frustrating. And I have so many ... couldn't afford to replace them with something else.

Re: Colored pencil recommendations?

Cindy- I first started drawing and mainly used pencils. One day i came upon a very talented artist who said they used Crayola color pencils for their artwork and was amazed it was with Crayola. Since that day I only buy Crayola myself the 50pk , lol
Here is an example of my work done with Crayola

Re: Colored pencil recommendations?

I use prismacolors almost exclusively with some coloursofts when I do a person portrait, I like glazing over the top.

I would never buy anything I can't get open stock.

I only use the tips at the end, I am a charter member of the flat tip club, so that doesn't bother me.

Most of my pieces here are in colored pencil, I only started painting in oils last year.

Re: Colored pencil recommendations?

I like the Prismacolors, even though they do break in the sharpener or crumble more easily than other brands. They are soft and go down on paper and blend so well. Other brands that are a bit harder, or even Verithins, are good to go over edges and sharpen details. Most of my work on etsy is colored pencil. I have a few mixed media with pastels or pen and ink, which helps speed up time spent on the art. Pen and ink can fill in black areas and pastels are great for backgrounds and putting down a thin layer of a basic color before starting with pencils.

I love working with Faber Castell Polychromos pencils for a smooth effect.

Re: Colored pencil recommendations?

I love Polychromos, Pablos, Lyras (all oil based), and Luminance. Prismacolors have been breaking like mad since they changed the manufacturing, so I don't use them much anymore. Too frustrating!

ArtfromHolland ~ love your drawing ... beautiful.

I still use Prismacolors ... they don't break too often, and I love them.
