Laundry question

I do laundry at a laundromat. I wash my clothes in cold water.

Sheets, towels etc in hot. I used liquid detergent only for both hot and cold.

When I wash in cold, there is white residue here and there on my clothes when i take them out of machine.

It's a pain to have to scrub it off .

Why is there white residue on my clothes? I've used different brands of detergent but it happens with all of them.

Any advice ?

Re: Laundry question

Its not what you're using.  It's residue in the laundromat machines from other people's laundry.  Not everyone uses liquid soap, and I'm sure the machines are not cleaned as regularly as they need to be.

I don't really have any advice though.  Maybe try scrubbing out the washer prior to doing a load?  Although, If I'm right about the residue theory, I have a feeling the washers would need a far more thorough cleaning (a run with HOT water and vinegar/washer cleaning solution/etc).

Re: Laundry question

White residue . . . I think it might be washing powder that has been used in the washing machine, some might have dried up inside the drum or in the drawer.

Re: Laundry question

I used to have to go to the laundromat to get laundry done so I remember =]  At one point, I had to go every week and I went early morning in the weekend. I remember the cold weather and the bringing home washed clothes that were all very creased coming out of the dryer. I loved those huge dryer drums and the warm air from the drying.

Re: Laundry question

It is definitely laundry powder residue......I have been doing laundry for about 100 years (okay, maybe 50 plus years) and that is the one reason I prefer liquid detergent....not much help here, but that is what I think it is.

Re: Laundry question

Happy b. - Yeah that's why I use liquid as well, but I still get the residue when i wash in cold, so I think I'm gonna have to do do as the others above said- wipe down the machine inside 1st!

Re: Laundry question

Yep, I'm thinking the same thing as others have posted - when I once used to experience this, it seemed to be a residue problem with the machine and with powder detergent, and yes I noticed it when using laundromat machines and not my own machine when I eventually got to have my own.

I haven't had this problem with liquid detergent or my own machine. I'm not sure how to solve the problem without getting away from the laundromat machines. You could wipe out the drum and the drawer but I have a feeling that residue could get into and remain in the internal parts of the machine too, the conduit from the powder drawer to the drum, etc, places you can't clean. I'm no expert on the parts of a washing machine but the "inside places" that your washing water goes through, and comes into contact with, get gunged up with stuff too.
