"A few days ago my sister, who is an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) charge nurse at Inova Fairfax, reached out to my family and asked us to make fabric surgical caps for her and the other nurses in the ICU units. She works on the ICU units taking care of COVID-19 positive patients. The caps become part of the nurse’s or doctor’s scrubs and they wear it for their entire shift. She told us that the nurses on her unit desperately needed fabric surgical caps to cover their hair. The cap becomes a part of their uniform and covers and protects their hair. They will wear these caps for their entire 12 hour shift underneath their PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Each nurse or doctor takes his or her cap home at the end of the day and washes it before returning for their next shift. When a sterile procedure is needed, they will put a sterile cap over the fabric cap. Without these caps, the nurses will need to clean their hair very harshly to prevent contamination.
