Local Craft Shows

I was wondering what shows people are planning to participate in this year. I will probably do a couple of First Sundays in Annapolis and am on the fence about Fenton Street. I would like to share ideas, places etc.

Thank you,

Cindy

Re: Local Craft Shows

Its probably time to revive the threads that listed shows in each month. If you do a search, you will find them. Most shows offered last year will be offered again.

I plan to do:
Takoma Park Art Hop (April)
Takoma Park Street Festival (Oct.)
Art on Bellmont at Adams Morgan Day (Sept)

Possibly
City of Rockville Art Fair during Hometown Holidays (Memorial Day)

Shows I've done in the past that I will NOT be doing again:
Occoquon Spring and Fall festivals
Fairfax Holiday Show
Catocton Color Fest
Sykesville Apple Butter Market
Bel Air Festival of the Arts

Re: Local Craft Shows

I have done all these shows before
Takoma Park Art Hop (April)
Takoma Park Street Festival (Oct.)
Art on Bellmont at Adams Morgan Day (Sept)

The Takoma Park Street Festival I've done three years in a row. And those three shows are my highest all time sales The other two I did for the first time this past year and did extremely well.

the Takoma Park community seems to be my target audience (Scientists, professors, well educated, lovers of quirky arts, not too rich). I have spoken to other artists who have not done that well there. So take that with a grain of salt.

Art on Bellmont in Adams Morgan was one of the best juried shows I've done -- A wonderful variety of quality artisans. And like Takoma Park seems to have an abundance of my type of buyers.

Re: Local Craft Shows

Jane, I am curious as to why you won't do the Catoctin Colorfest again. I've actually thought about signing up for that one, as I've heard a lot of good things from vendors there, and I absolutely love going to that one as a buyer every year. I would love to hear your thoughts on it! Thanks!

Re: Local Craft Shows

To give you perspective: I do best at higher-end Fine Craft and Arts shows that have a rigorous jury process. I find the audience that comes to these shows values finely made craft and are prepared to pay the higher prices for them.

I did Catoctin Colorfest two years ago and found it too be very poorly juried. Though there were some really fine artists and craftsman there, these were mixed in with poor quality vendors and resellers (thought these were against the rules -- a sign of a less than adequate jury process).

At that time the "official" Juried Craft fair was divided into two locations. But between those locations, all over town, people set up booths that were not juried in. This added to the "lower quality" look to the entire affair.
I spoke to many fine artisans who were there that weekend who were also very disappointed.
Ultimately, this show does not bring in my target audience.

Re: Local Craft Shows

Cindy- I've done Fenton Street market for two summers now. I have nothing but great things to say. Business fluctuates since it is a weekly event. I normally do two shows a month from May to October. Hope this helps

Re: Local Craft Shows

Thanks Jane! I know what you mean about the lower quality vendors there. That is probably the one thing I dislike about going to Colorfest. I usually just walk right by all of those and just go to the two main areas - if I even go to both of them. Sometimes I just go to the main one in the park - that seems to be where the best vendors are. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question!

---------------------------
The monthly threads were too much for me to maintain. Instead I've got a calendar up with links to the event or discussion. It's on the left side of the team page. I try to post everything on there that I see, but if there's anything missing just let me know and I'll add it on :)

Its new this year and his put on by the same people as the Bethesda Row Arts Festival people. So it should be a good show. HIgh End, well juried.

I didn't think the Fenton St Market started until April.

The Takoma Park Street Festival is October 6.

Re: Local Craft Shows

Has anybody done the American Market at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD? If so could you give some comments. Even if you just went to the Market to check it out please give me some comments. You don't have to sign up for the whole 26 Saturdays. The cost would be $60.00 per show plus 10% commission.

Re: Local Craft Shows

Will anyone be at the Maryland Home and Garden Show this weekend? I'm going to visit to check it out and maybe apply for 2014. I'll let you know what I learn.

I'll be at the Spring Sugarloaf Timonium show at the end of April, although I'm not sure if I'll do any more of those. They're expensive, and when I speak with other artists and crafters they describe better days in the past, and feel the shows are drawing smaller crowds.

I like the Green Man festival over Mother's Day weekend in Greenbelt and will be there. That's a great little show, and this year they're providing overnight security so I don't need to break down my display and tent.
I'm going to apply for Artscape in Baltimore in July but that's a stretch...
I am planning fewer shows this year than last year.

Re: Local Craft Shows

I did the Fenton Street Market last summer but I didn't have a lot of luck with it. That being said I think it got taken over by the city so someone new is managing it now. Oh and looks like they are expanding it to do one in Tacoma Park this summer.
