Just not working

I've tried and tried to change my measurements, but the calculator is waaay overestimating my shipping. Like by more than double.

For one, my jars are a cylinder and it's asking for h/w/l. Not sure if that's the problem, but this dumb one can't figure out which is which on a cylinder. I have height and width, but no length. Gah.

Re: Just not working

Lengh would the longest measurement of an item. You have to put that longest measurement first.

I've got a small glass jar and it's around 5"x2"x2".

Even though it's 5" tall (which is height), I'd have to put that on the length because it's the longest measurement.

Depending on your jar, the last 2 measurements might be the same.

Kathy (woodcraftsandcandles) might be good at answering this since she sell candles and some are in jars.

I know you have to experiment with the measurements, sometimes making them smaller than the item or the calculator will estimate an oversize box based on the item dimensions you put in.

You might be better of unchecking "Etsy common box sizes" and setting up package preferences to put what size boxes you use.

That way, etsy will only figure items going in your box sizes, not in etsy's box sizes..

Re: Just not working

Hi Pat! Lovebubs, yes I sell jar candles. My measurements for those are 5x4x4 in the listings for the calculator - the jars are 4 1/2 inches tall, but I've measured them with bubble wrap around them. The most important thing is to put the longest measurement first, then, being a jar the other two measurements will be the same.

If you use flat rate boxes then you want to add those to your Preferences.

Re: Just not working

I think there is a bug right now - everyone is getting too high shipping. I finally found a way to test and the calculator is not using my Preferences for Flat Rate Boxes.

Re: Just not working

Thanks for the replies. Maybe the bug explains it because it seems to be ignoring any of the flat rate boxes I put in. I'll keep checking to see if that gets better. Thanks again!

Re: Just not working

I'm still having more than double charging. In fact, no matter how small I make the product, even .5" when it is really 3 inches, it still doesn't change the shipping charged. It should be picking the regional rate a box as the cheapest choice, but it doesn't even seem to be picking the large flat rate, which would be more than enough room. It's charging more than the cost of a flat rate .

I wish it would let me put in that I know I can get 16 jars in a regional rate a, 30 in a large flat rate, etc.

Re: Just not working

Hi there! I just msg Mike. I just started up the calculated shipping and having the same trouble. USPS SM Flat Rate is charging exactly $3.00 over & the Medium gave a much lower rate. Thanks! Looking forward to this.

Re: Just not working

Christina, while you are waiting for Mike. A couple of questions - what zip code are you using to test your med flat rate item? If you are using a zip close to you then regular PM might be cheaper than med flat rate so the calculator is pulling that in instead.

Do you have any fees attached to your item or box for the small flat rate item?

Re: Just not working

Ah, Christina - you are in CA right? So shipping in a med flat rate box would be more expensive than using just regular Priority. The calculator will not only pull in the smallest box possible - it will pull in the cheapest option.

Try testing with a zip code on the east coast. Mine is 02816 - I bet it uses the med flat rate then.

Re: Just not working

Ok, got it. No, that makes sense, it's trying to correct for lower shipping. I will use yours when I get a minute tonight. Thanks!

Re: Just not working

I'm trying to use the shipping calculator for the first time and I'm a bit confused.
After entering the weight and dimensions I'm still being asked to enter a shipping price in the section: shipping costs - ships to - by itself - with another item. If I still have to enter a $ shipping amount, combined costs and everywhere else costs what is the point of the calculator? Thanks for any assistance.

Re: Just not working

Cris, you need to set up a shipping profile first. Then you need to select that to attach to your listing.
