Calculated shipping confusion

Hello-
We're still fairly new to Etsy, and we're having a major issue with the shipping calculator. It's overcharging customers (a lot), and I'm totally lost as to what to do to fix it. Can anyone help me?

Re: Calculated shipping confusion

Are you enter the item dimensions only + any packing?

Do not enter the box size, Box sizes you use go in the package preference section under custom sizes.

Need more info?

Overcharging how?

On 1 item or multiples?

If multiples it's more than likely due to you "not" have a box big enough in your list of boxes or either etsy's box sizes for the calculator to fit multiple items in.

Do you have a handling fee on your shipping profile?
This is ADDED per Item.

A packaging fee on a box/mailer in the package preference section is ADDED per order.

If you have fees in both places both can be added to an order.

Re: Calculated shipping confusion

Just added a few different items to my cart.

Shipping was doubling/tripling the more items I added.

This is due because of NOT having a box big enough to fit more than 1 item in and/or because you're entering the box size and NOT the item size when you list an item.

Or either you've got a HIGH handling fee on your profile of $4 or more.

One item I entered was Paleo crackers and shipping was really high for just those. $10.80.
I'm in NC and you're in PA so shipping shouldn't be but around $6.60 if it's around 1 lb 1 oz to 2 lbs.

For $10.80 I could ship around 15 lbs from NC to PA

Re: Calculated shipping confusion

Thanks for your help. We have a $3 handling fee. We ship with ice packs this time of year, so that also adds a bit of weight. You were correct about the handling fee being on the shipping profile plus the package preferences. I just went in and fixed that. I'm trying to figure out if that will solve the issue, or if there's another problem still. We do have the dimensions listed correctly per item - our cookies are shipped in bakery boxes that are 8x8x2.5. They fit snugly in an 8x8x8 regular box, and they also fit in both medium and flat rate boxes. However, only 2 would fit per box. Sometimes, if someone orders 3 dozen, we offer to put the third in a bakery bag.
