Re: Wordpress

Ive been shopping eCommerce themes for a client and Im starting to see themes offering digital downloads! :) Not much was offered in a theme for downloads before.

Just though Id share!

I found the themes on http://themeforest.net under Wordpress responsive themes. This is my go to site for themes, I find they have the biggest selection of pro themes.

Re: Wordpress

I have my blog hosted on wordpress and there are so many great plug ins and themes. I found one that supports a ton of widgets and looks great.

I just did a google search for "best free wordpress themes" and found a great one! Eventually I want to build my own so I can have my blog match my main site but I've been busy lately. :(

Re: Wordpress

Kelly, for using woocommerce did you have to buy your own SSL cert and IP address? What level of hosting do you need to have for running woocommerce safely?

Re: Wordpress

I didnt buy the SSL yet, I just run Paypal right now, runs like Etsy does and redirects. I will buy it through Godaddy. I use their middle hosting plan. You only need the SSL for a Direct Checkout, they wont let you use their service without a SSL certificate. My IP is my own net access thats secure from my cable/net company

I do have a DC ready when I get the SSL, Im using MasterCards service.

Re: Wordpress

For self-installed wordpress,

- what are the plugins you usually install?
- do you always install Jetpack?

I got hosting yesterday and installed wordpress and jetpack. It was interesting to find that lots of features that I took for granted on wordpress.com are not available on '.org'.

Re: Wordpress

I usually only install the plugins the theme I buy requires. I buy nice quality themes Filled with bells and whistles. Too many plugins cause issues! lol

I didnt do the Jetpack, no help plugins, etc.

Yes, that version of Wordpress does have its limits...

Re: Wordpress

I just want to mention, Im not fond of the Jetpack at this time. When I use the plugin is whacks out things on my site and I use a high quality theme with great support.

Jetpack needs fine tuning still. Look up outside plugins to meet your needs over the bundled Jetpack if it whacks out your Wordpress.

Re: Wordpress

I'm seriously starting to consider making the move to wordpress and moving my blog and shop to one place. I have a few questions though: What does a move like this generally cost and how do I even start?

Re: Wordpress

Buy Wordpress hosting, back up your blogger, then import. Its free.

Godaddy is doing $12 for the year right now with a free domain! :) A good theme is $50-65.

So for about $70 you can start whole new site/blog paid up for the year.

If I were you do it now when you are small, the more content to move the more work it will be. You can do So much more with WP. So much open source plugins etc.

I just found this step by step info. :)

Re: Wordpress

Thank you, Kelly! That's very helpful! I really thought it would be more expensive than that...

How about your shop? Is it with woocommerce or something else? Woocommerce seems good but I see a lot of the add on features are really expensive to do basic things...

Re: Wordpress

I use woo, its plenty good with the free. :)

I use a table weight shipping plugin for $22, the rest is just what comes with woo.

Flat rate shipping is already set up in woo for US and international.

Paypal is payments, a DC is free but if you want to run a DC you'll need an SSL which is $70 per year. I dont have one yet myself, I'll buy one in the next few months or so.

Dont do anything 'woo' extra, there is always an alternative!

There are a bunch of woo extras here for 'cheap', woo is expensive,

http://codecanyon.net/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&term=woo+commerce&view=list&sort=&date=&category=wordpre...

If you buy a good theme with woo(not a woo theme) usually it comes with some extra features as well.

Re: Wordpress

I find for my products and how small I am, the woo features work plenty great and Im sure they will for you too.

They have variations(attributes), quality, discounts, reviews, simple product, downloads, linking to related products, some bulk editing, unlimited listings, etc.

Browse through these themes and check out the carts to see its features. :)

Re: Wordpress

I want to add once you learn it and get into the groove, you'll never look back! You will see how its so much more robust than Blogger. You''ll be like , what took me so long? ha ha

website and blog in one, is great, all one panel back end. Pages, posts, and product have very similar formats so its easy.

Re: Wordpress

I keep adding! ha ha

You could also just get the blog over, settle in with that then build the site pages as you progress. Do it in steps since you are importing if you know what I mean.

Another tip, pre write content for pages like about, policies, terms and things like that so when you are ready you can paste that info and format into your theme.

Re: Wordpress

Kelly I genuinely appreciate all your advice! Seriously, you've really taken away a lot of the stress from the process. I had more than 1 person tell me i needed at least $500 up front to get started. :/

I started working on the page last night but something happened and when i logged in this morning the entire site was gone. after an hour of fumbling i decided just to call the server host and have them wipe it clean. I started over today and I'm already really loving it!

You're right about the no going back. UGH why is blogger so poopy?! lol.

My plan is to import my blog posts and just go live with that, then slowly add more shop items as I go. Ack I'm so excited!!!!

Thanks!
