How to Comment on Other People's Blogs.

Commenting on other blogs is a big part of networking and becoming a part of the big ol' blogging community. It's good for building a reputation and demonstrating your areas of expertise. It's also just nice to say thanks to someone for providing great content. That said, quality comments are hard to come by.

I don't know about anyone else but I struggle with commenting on blogs even though I love their content and want to connect. I feel silly just writing "Thanks!" "Great post!" "Good job!" over and over again. It's superficial and contributes nothing to the (hopefully) ongoing conversation. I did some Googling and found two articles about how to craft good comments when you visit other blogger's pages and I hope it helps others to work on their commenting skills. :D

Feel free to add your thoughts on the subject!

Re: How to Comment on Other People's Blogs.

Me personally when commenting on other blogs. I am on wordpress so I see lots of other blogs in my timeline. I don't comment on them all. I only comment on the blog posts that I know little something about. If it is just a pic I usually might say something really short and simple. On wordpress they let you fave posts too and sometimes I do that if I have nothing to say.

Nessa, Just wanted to say Darren Rowse from Problogger is really good. I've read some of his articles and always found them very helpful. Of course, I like this one on how to comment. Now to put it into practice!

Just want to add this "story": Two years ago, there was a thread on Apartment Therapy about Etsy. I forget the exact initial post statement but it allowed people to list their favorite Etsy items. A good 70-80% were Etsy folks who just left links to their own shops or item link from their shop--not even with a comment. I listed 4 items from shops I really liked with comments of why I liked them, and ended in a clear statement an item from my shop. For the first several months, a week didn't go by when I didn't get views via that thread and it continued for over a year. Even a few weeks ago, I got a view! That to say, a good comment is better than a poor one, giving credence to the articles above.

I know what you mean, Carley, sometimes leaving a simple like is best.

Shirley, that's an EXCELLENT example of what good commenting can do! Thank you for sharing.

Yeah, I really struggle with this! It's hard because you can ask questions to keep the conversation going but commenting on blogs doesn't work like holding a convo in real life, especially because a blogger can just decide not to reply, then it just looks awkward.

Re: How to Comment on Other People's Blogs.

I hear you, Hannah! I recently commented about a personal struggle on a blog about progress and personal triumph, a month has passed and the comment has not been responded to. It's definitely awkward and a little hurtful. My opinion of that blog definitely diminished.

I understand that life gets in the way so but when a blogger asks people to open themselves up and then never make an effort to reply to that contact it just kills people's desire to comment in the first place.

So it's a 2 way street. Good comments deserve good responses.
