I am directing people right left and centre to this keyword tool with no real guide on how to use it!!

Sorry about that!!

Here is a guide :-)

Right, so the first thing you need is a list of words about your shop. Do it on a large piece of paper with lots of space for making notes. Three ways to do this:

* Make a list from your brain or a thesaurus. (Does anyone else think a Thesaurus should be a type of dinosaur?) I like to make lists in a sort of spider diagram, but a list format will probably be best for sensible people.

* Put your Etsy address into this website: http://www.wordle.net. It will generate a big cloud of words you have used in your descriptions. This might help you make your list of words. Of you might see that you only use very specific words and not many descriptive ones. Either way, it's helpful!

* Think up ten words that describe your shop. So, for me, I might say:

cute
sweet
jewellery
colourful
rainbow
girly
fun
original
personalised
kawaii
gorgeous

That wasn't too hard. Everyone should be able to think up ten words right? Now take that list and sit in front of someone you live with/someone you just met in the street/your dad, and play the Word Association Game. You shout out a word from your list, and they shout out the first word that comes into their head.

It's a fun way to gather words!

Right, so you have a huge list now of words, at least 20, yes?

Okay, go here:

http://www.google.co.uk/sktool/#

Read what it says on the screen, because it should be offering you an updated version of the tool. For some reason, the updated link doesn't fit well with Etsy forums and I can't post it here. But it's the updated version you want.

Now, into the box, put all your words on separate lines.

Then click 'Search'

Now, scroll down a little, and you will see a list of words with their date displayed on the same line. Ignore everything but:

COMPETITION

MONTHLY SEARCHES

For this first set of words, we want competition to have around a half filled bar or LOWER.

We want monthly searches to be at least 800-1000.

Circle or highlight all the words on your list that meet this criteria.

Now, go back and try and pair up words together to make phrases. Try and pair up words that you have circled.

So, I might try Sweet Jewellery, Kawaii Cute, Gorgeous Handmade.

Keep trying all the circled words in combination with each other and 'standard' words that probably apply to most peoples shops like Gift, Handmade, Etsy, Homemade, Unique, Original.

Try and get a good selection of two and three word phrases with LOW competition (below half) and HIGH monthly searches. (This will be relative, but I would aim for around 1,000 for highly saturated markets such as jewellery/cards/supplies/knits and around 400 for niche items)

These are the words and phrases you are going to put in your shop.

Why?

Well, individually they are strong words, we know that because you circled them.

Together, they are strong phrases. We know that because you put them together.

In your titles, they give lots of scope for searches to find you.

I hope that makes it a little clearer!

I think the key for you is to start with general terms. So pop these into the keyword tool:

Unique
Gift
Baby
Wool
Handmade

It might seem odd to use handmade on a Handmade site, but think from the point of view of a googler who hasn't ever SEEN Etsy (yes, weirdly, they do exist!)

Then narrow down to items

Hat
Skien
Yarn
Merino
Alpaca

Now try combinations of those words, even if they seem odd.

Merino Gift
Baby Yarn

From here, you should be able to gain some keywords that WILL draw people to your shop, even if they didn't actually know they wanted to be there :-)

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

Thanks for the tips
I was avoiding being redundant with the word handmade, But it is now at least added to most of my Tags if not up top in the description

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

I'm really struggling with the keywords thing because all of the words I chose and are on wordle are way below 800. Reading this thread, maybe I should try more general words.

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

nicsknots: I think what you are finding is that your 'niche' words are under 800. For niche items like yours, i.e not jewellery, wool items or prints, I would probably suggest looking for the 500-800+ region.

The best way is to combine them. So chose a general term and then a lesser term, followed by a more general term. It might read a bit odd, but it means you'll be grabbing as many people as possible.

Don't panic! I know it can be a bit scary. Sadly, if you want to sell online there IS no easy way to do it. Etsy does a lot of the work for you compared to setting up your OWN sites, so that's something to feel very grateful for for us all!

You need to take things slowly. Forget about the computer and sit down with a good old fashioned piece of paper. Set yourself a timer for half an hour, and come up with a whole page of words that describe your shop. Start with the basics and go from there. Types of wood, finishes you use, styles, eras, anything!

You don't need to use the keyword tool if you don't want to. Just pick out a few words that you like to use across your shop. Words you think other people might use. Words YOU would use if you saw a picture of one of your items somewhere and wanted to find it again.

Then you can start worrying about where to put them !

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

When applying the popular keywords for our shops found from google is it better to use "prom dresses" as one tag or "prom" and "dresses" as two tags?

Which way would be more searchable? If this doesn't make sense let me know I tried to word it the best I could!

Thanks!!

Thank you so much for explaining this! I can actually UNDERSTAND how to use the keyword tool now instead of blindly typing in words. Thank you, thanks, thanks again!!

Google is discontinuing the original tool but has this new tool for us to use. Seems to work similarly. Using http://www.wordle.net/ to create a visual of what words were used the most in my shop was interesting. mm kept coming up and I couldn't think of what that was - millimeter - oops, yes the measurements for my yoyos.
