Paint Quality Question?????

I usually mix my colors but am thinking of buying a few colors I'd like to have on hand.
I haven't used Dick Blick Paint before and wonder if any of you have. I'm looking at their oil paint since they have a few colors I would like.
Some years ago Liquitex made oil paint and I still have a couple of tubes of unique colors but don't think they make oil paint anymore. At least I could find Oil Liquitex.

Any help will be appreciated

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

I've never used Dick Blick oil paints. I've only ever used either Grumbacher or Winsor & Newton (plus Permalba white).

I think it is well worth buying unique colors, especially those where the hue is difficult to duplicate with primaries, like Cerulean Blue or French Ultramarine Blue. Usually the are so "unique" that you don't use a lot of them and they last for a long time.

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

I bought a tube of Dick Blick Sap Green oil paint once. It smelled awful; I didn't like the color, and have never bought another tube of their brand. It might be fine--I like a lot of their products, but my one experience with their oil paint wasn't positive. My favorite brand is M. Graham, but I use Grumbacher, Windsor Newton, and Gamblin paints, too.

Why do you like M. Graham, Nancy? I've never used it--interested to know.

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

I like to use Gamblin... it's expensive, but I love the consistency and vibrancy. I actually ordered a tube of Dick Blick oil paint yesterday... will let you know what I think of it.

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

I like M. Graham because it is consistently creamy, prices are reasonable, and the colors clear and vibrant. It is made with walnut oil and dries more slowly than many other brands which might be considered a disadvantage by some. I don't mind.

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

I don't think I've ever used paint cut with walnut oil before. Hmm--I might try it. I really hate the smell of linseed oil.

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

Good morning
I've been looking online and reading about oil paints. Looking to see if much has changed since I started painting some 35 plus years ago. Came to the conclusion that I will stick to what I know best. I''ve painted with grumbacher probably 90%. Both with my oil and watercolors. Will just have to get my color chart out I made more years ago then I want to remember. It is about 5 sheets of the 12x16 inch canvas paper.......made it with lots of colors since I never wanted to do it again.
Have a great day painting everyone and thank you!!!!!!

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

That sounds time-consuming Donnarose. I did one in watercolor dyes for art school. I hated that assignment--we were graded not just on our colors, but on how straight we could cut out the swatches with our x-acto knives.

I couldn't cut a straight line to save my soul--then or now!

Re: Paint Quality Question?????

Did I mention that I tried Dick Blick Sap Green... and hate it! Ugh. Nancy, you are right, it does smell awful! I used it for the tree in this piece:

I like how it turned out here, but really don't like the other work I've done with it. Going back to what I know also.

Donnarose, the chocolate pot is great. I could do this challenge, but looks like it's too late to join--maybe she will have another one after this?
