What we do by habit we do almost automatically . . . And for 2017 online shopping habits have become very powerful!

The Smart Phone . . . The Tablet . . .

For the most part handheld use of smart phones while driving are against the law. Studies indicate using handheld phones and texting while driving is as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This habit can be deadly, yet we all see many who violate these laws . . . Perhaps a vehicle simply drifts across a traffic lane where a collision occurs . . . Either head-on or going in the same direction . . . Sometimes death or serious injury occurs.

This illustrates how powerful, strong, and compelling habits can be.

Big online retailers know well the power of shopper's habits in shopping.

QVC --- if you watched "The Celebrity Apprentice" this last week you saw on Muscle Beach how the sales presenter was coached/directed by another who was watching incoming phone calls. QVC knows the value shoppers place on their favorite colors (by habit) . . .

Amazon vs. Walmart --- this is very serious business how these retail giants are involved in their studies of the shoppers' habits.

Handmade --- which shopping APP is more habit forming? Etsy or Amazon?

Amazon Prime = Free 2nd day shipping after paying for this service. And, after you subscribe and pay for a service the more likely you will use it.

Walmart started Free 2nd Day Shipping for half the cost of Amazon's Prime ($50/year) which it just stopped. Now Free 2nd Day Shipping on most items when order is $35 or more.

How powerful will Etsy shoppers' habit for FREE SHIPPING become in 2017?

My thoughts today (please share your thoughts here too) are:

From the USA Free Internationnal Shipping costs up to 3/4 times domestic shipping. For me, right now my answer is no free international shipping. Yet, Free Domestic (within USA) is a dilemma for me.

My USA shipping price is $3.95 for 1st Class Insured with Delivery Tracking/Confirmation . . . And, this is a Flat Ratd charge where additional items in order ship free.

Essentially my choice is:

Free Shipping . . . Increase my item price by $3.95

No Free Shipping . . . Place item ON SALE with a $3.95 price reduction

Same buyer total cost just different ways to state it.

"6 of one - half a dozen of another"

Bottom Line . . . It is all about the shoppers' online shopping habits in 2017 . . .

Under well that we all own habits and for today's online shopper, especially those using a Smart Phone or Tablet for shopping their shopping habits are important for us to understand well.

While our discussion here example is about "Free Shipping" versus "$4 Off Sale" and which will trigger (or hook) the shopper to "click on" our listings . . . Habits both formerly learned and those simply acquired really do make up a whole lot of our and others behavior!
