Picture Pointers?

Can anyone offer any good pointers for taking crisp pictures? I tried to take pics one the close up setting and the flash causes the colors to be too bright; shutting the flash off causes the pics to be too dark and I've even tried taking the pics outside most recently and still can't get good color. I think my pictures are terrible and worried that its hurting the views my shop is getting.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also try using Fotofuse.com to improve the quality of your photos. The pictures of the hats I have listed in my store right now were edited with Fotofuse.

Re: Picture Pointers?

This has helped how my pictures look. I am not willing to go and purchase a $300+ camera just yet so I've been making things look better by using one of these...

best of luck!

Re: Picture Pointers?

Love your shop! Your banner and profile pic are perfect. I think your photo's are the problem. My pictures aren't that amazing but if you look at my shop you will see what a cheap camera and a lightbox do :)

Re: Picture Pointers?

IMHO, I don't think your photo's are bad? If you can make a photo lightbox like Ruby and Jane suggested, that may help you. I have the same problem basically, and not much you can do with but try the lightbox and outdoors during different times of the day. Good Luck.

Re: Picture Pointers?

I have similar problems and have found that taking pictures outside, but under cover (ie: not in direct sunlight) helps. Or insdie near a window. I'm still learning though. Sometimes they seem ok until I post them and then I realise they look shabby!

Re: Picture Pointers?

Try outside on a cloudy day, it diffuses the light, the use photo editing software. You should be able to increase the sharpness and exposure there. Keep in mind that Etsy uses a white background, so you really need to brighten your whites. I use iPhoto and Photoshop but I've heard of some free software from google. You have a good start!

Re: Picture Pointers?

Photoediting is the secret, whether you use gimp, photoshop or something else. Every single on of my pics have to edit to make it brighter, it doesn't distort the color just gives it a crisp view. Never use a flash or even overhead lights, they distort the color and cast a yellow hue. Natural lighting will give you the best result. Practice practice practice is the secret

Re: Picture Pointers?

I use a dslr canon rebel t2i for pics of my items. See my etsy to see quality and of course some photoshop if needed but usually the camera alone takes great pics.

Re: Picture Pointers?

I've tried a lightbox and it doesn't work for my silver pieces - washes them out no matter what I do. I am better taking them in a well lit room with my point and shoot camera and a tripod.

Re: Picture Pointers?

I just looked at your photos and wish mine looked as good. You have so much color in your items it is hard for them to look bad. All they have to be is in focus and it looks like you do that very well.

Re: Picture Pointers?

I also use a light box, its good for some items only. What I usually do is sit my items on top of the light box, when I put them inside its difficult to take a picture of the object upwards. I put the cover that comes with it (red, black or white) on top of the light box, you can use a a bed sheet but make sure its ironed first. I put one or two fluorescent lights , one on each side, i could put one at the back but usually two does the job and just to lazy to set up my room for photography for a hairclip and other small accessories lolll. Why fluorescent lights? Normal light bulbs have an orangy/yellowish color and it will only bounce back on the wall creating a reflection in your object and/or your object changing colors. You want to stay as close as possible to natural light, and fluorescent lights does just that. I use them a lot when shooting behind a green screen, easier to remove the background.

My dslr is a 18 Mega pixel, which helps. I barely need to use photoshop and if so, simply to adjust the brightness and contrast because I'm just too lazy to manually set up my camera lolll.

Re: Picture Pointers?

I'm a newbie, but I have been taking my pictures with a big white piece of poster board curved around my items so that the light reflects off of as much surface area that it can. I also make sure the light is nice and close to the item =)
