I need some help from creative minds!

Okay - a critique I got on my shop is that my titles for the artwork needs to be more creative and fun!

Here's my problem - they are named the way they are because I cannot think of fun titles for each of them! I'm not good with words!

So - wanted to see if anyone would be willing to take a stab at new titles for my work?!

Post any suggestions for changes!

Thanks in advance!

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

Thesaurus.com is a great resource! I get stuck on the same couple of words, so I'll go there and find some creative ways to say the simplest words. For instance, "pretty" is common, but saying "darling" or "elegant" helps give the listing a little more intrigue.

As a painter myself, I find it hard to say I'd want someone else naming my pieces, but that's personal preference. I'd definitely dig through Thesaurus.com and maybe cut up words you like from magazines and use those to spark titles (this might even spark new pieces!). :)

Good advice - I've tried using thesaurus.com and it was getting me no where. I'll try the magazing thing tonight though!

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

Good luck! In naming anything, I try to think of a few and then whichever one sticks out or calls out to me is what it is. Sometimes it's clear, sometimes it takes a while. Magazines or even old books should really help you discover some great word combinations, though!

I started out with titles, but read a blog piece that said you should name it what it is because that is how people will be looking. His example was "feathered earrings" instead of "peacock blue" or something like that. It's a mystery.

Bluegator is absolutly correct on this! I have read the same thing too. It is much easier to find on a google search, but I'll probably continue to give them cute names though, it gives them personality :)

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

lol - well this is a relief for me! I had been thinking about that as well last night. I was trying to think of names but had decided that it was best to leave them with practical names!

Good deal - I'm glad that you guys agree. When it had been suggested that I change my names I was starting to panic a little! Now I don't feel so bad about not following that advice - thanks!

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

My friends who sell here (and they sell a LOT of pieces here!) say that unless it's an item like a greeting card or supplies you are selling, you really want to have a creative name that calls out to people. I'm far less likely to click an item that says "Blue Necklace" than I am to click a necklace called "One Starry Night". This would be especially true of paintings, but again, that's the artist in me. I get annoyed seeing "Untitled #1" but "In the Poppy-colored Fields" would give me a sense of connection. I see that name and think "I loved poppies in Italy; I'm going to take a peek at this!"

I'll note that it is my personal preference, but that's the advice I've been given time and time again. In fact, it helps me at shows, too. People see my jewelry and love that it has a story and a name instead of "Necklaces at X price". I sell more jewelry based on the stories than others around me who are selling jewelry for less. Just something to think about. :)

I do put a generic description after the name of my piece for Etsy because I know not everyone thinks like I or my friends do, but I don't think it's bad to have a name for your art. Like LilyBean said, it gives personality and a connection to your audience and that's one of the most valuable tools you have!

Wanted to add that I'm not saying one way or the other is right, but on Etsy you want to connect with as many people as you can so having a title + generic description in your title can't hurt!

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

I agree with Aerial too! I prefer fun attention grabbing names too! I like to use them and I like to read them, it gives me an inside to what the artist was thinking about when they created thier piece. I have been doing the fun name + collection name + generic color descriptions. I don't know if it's working on google, but it works for me. Who knows what is best, I guess whatever it is, make sure it makes you happy :)

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

what to do, what to do! I'm going to research a little more on the google topic... If they are found better through google with straight forward names then I think I will let them remain - but if my tags will do that work efficiently in google then I could stand to be a little more creative... Off to do some more research!

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

I tend to think musically when I am naming some of my pieces. Song titles are easy to remember, and if they fit a piece I will use it. Like your Bike Spokes photo, the first thing that popped into my head was the lyrics "I want to ride my bicycle... I want to ride my bike".

Also books and stories are big in my mind as well.

LOL!! I do the same thing AllThat. It's always songs and the Queen song popped into my head too!! That and a Journey song, "The wheels in the sky keep on turning" something like that. Elton John's Tiny Dancer is a title I want to use all the time. I love that someone else thinks the same way too!

Re: I need some help from creative minds!

I think "Lovely Birds" & "Florets in Blue" are very nice titles! I look at my items and close off all other thoughts to get a good feel for a title. Being from Colorado, all my knit scarves are named after the Colorado city or flower that they remind me of. The song idea is excellent!
