Re: The Chat Heart Beats...in February

Thanks all, I let him know.

Terri, I'm Paul, Jan is my mom and does some site/order management and social media. She and my ex wife got me into making jewelry, I just liked rock hunting a few years ago. Once I cut my first cabs I was hooked and started learning more about wire work to make stuff from my cabs. Now I'm branching into silver smithing and gemstones trying to create a business out of something I love.

In the non winter months I usually do odd jobs like landscaping and other outdoor work. It's hard work and not a lot of pay per hour, but you get a lot of hours. I'd like to do garden center work, but hours get cut sooner in the season and usually you don't get much OT. If I can do this and GC work I'd be happy.

Jan does stained glass but as a hobby. I keep telling her to just make a few things to list, but she doesn't want to turn a casual pleasure into work.

Re: The Chat Heart Beats...in February

I'm trying to come up with a catchy name for those "wiggle rings " made from sterling clay. I've test marketed them here over the holidays and they perform well. I'm stockpiling some stuff to reopen my Etsy shop and they are the first things I'm going to do.

They are cost effective and cute and metal clay is so expensive I think it might be a bit profitable if they caught on.

Kathy - "wiggle ring" sounds pretty catchy to me. Something I'd remember easily too.

Me: PMC3 for torch firing, OneFire PMC sterling for kiln. Never any issues.

The curvy ones Kathy? I like those. Not sure what to call them though.

Yesterday Hedda napped 10 min in the car and no more. It hope for better nap time today. She just fell asleep but is still coughy.

I finished some quick hammered earrings and some super pretty opal studs. And I was trying to make progress on a remake of an old aquamarine cuff.

Re: The Chat Heart Beats...in February

Most likely his flux recipe, time frame is right and he'd have had the prominence to have his name still attached to it.

Cool stuff. Why are they selling all that stuff all of a sudden?

I find it odd that he hoarded all his work. Is that odd?

I expect teaching at a high level would make it less necessary to sell everything to live.

Re: The Chat Heart Beats...in February

Just catching up! I am glad to read you are enjoying the dried ferns Kathy and it was so cool scrolling through the fllicker and seeing some more of the jewelry you have made. beautiful stuff!

I did a batch of casting a couple days ago and something Irene said saved a couple large flasks from getting destroyed. The outlet of the crucible in my spin caster plugged up with sterling midway through the ready to cast flasks in my kiln, causing one flask to be a total flop. And I couldn't get the hardened plug to melt out. I had another crucible in case the one I was using cracked but I had never seasoned it, and the instructions say it needs this, and it is an elaborate long process. The flasks that were ready to cast would be ruined if I waited to do this. And I recalled Irene saying she never seasoned her crucibles. So instead of hours in the kiln, I added some borax to the new crucible, heated it with my torch until the borax melted, and then used it to cast the last 2 flasks, with no problem. Phew.

It is still unusually cold here. Usually we have frogs going full tilt by mid Feb. So far not even a peep.

I always forget that a higher level of teaching pays so well. My professors never sold their work either. This actually made them quite unable to relate to the idea of making an actual living with your art....or teaching about it in any useful manner.

Re: The Chat Heart Beats...in February

Some of the pieces may have been his own inventory, others might have been in galleries at the time of his death or part of his own collection. Several are identified as studies for other pieces.

Tom Muir once explained to me that he made more money with some his large scale pieces in shows and in prize money than he ever would have be selling them.

Sue also talks about how prize money is a huge part of her jewelry income.

Jen, Ayla's little top pigtail is so cute!
It made me think of Pebbles Flintstone.

Ha! Yeah, she does look like a pebbles! 😂

She's been all over the place today. Trying to climb?! Pulling at wires! Getting into the kitchen. Isaacs feeling better today, so my house is full of children activity again, when ones down things get all wonky.

I didn't know about Prip. Some amazing work!

Glad you're getting back to normal Jen.

I wonder how this night will be. Hedda has been coughing since I put her in bed. :(

Is she old enough for honey? Over a year? You might give her just a bit and see if that will help.
