Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

morning all. I do heavy work in small doses now. Kit - bless you for still tackling the heavy jobs.

I belong to a small (10-14) group of ladysmiths on FB that are all very supportive and helpful to each other. They gave me an idea yesterday to do a slab of the week offering which I will cut customs from. I have so many nice slabs. I hope it works.

Tennis got cancelled for today - it's really windy and suppose to have light rain on and off all day. We are so saturated that even small amounts of rain aren't soaking in like normal.

Erin - is it getting harder to manage multiple shops as your jewelry biz grows and also K?

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

How common are horn hammers in the US? I'm preparing a little package for another metalsmith (who is really into historical reenactment) and I thought of adding one. Or at least the hammer head.

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

Had to Google horn hammers. Images shows everything from a literal 'horn' hammer to a framing claw hammer.

Is it just the silversmith's hammer using that name you'd want?

Minor first world problem....

What is better than discovering, in the process of doing a load of wash, going into your laundry room hearing silence and smelling that electrical burning smell?

Realizing your washer just died full to the brim with dirty water.

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

Little J is home today, throwing up. I don't think this is the thing from last year. I think there's a stomach virus going around. Thankfully. (is that weird to say?)

It's getting harder to manage two shops with K and the custom work I get here. I love making soaps and lotions, but they're just not selling the way they used to. Jewelry isn't the only thing people can buy mass manufactured and resell, and "private label soapers" have cropped up all over the place here.

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

I mean a literal horn hammer - similar to a rawhide one. It is a cross cut of the smaller end of the horn. It doesn't mar metal and can be carved to shape.

Which reminds me of an old project, making horn cups.

I'd love a horn hammer, Beatriz.
(Never heard of one, but now that I have...)

What a huge nightmare, Kate!
Will it drain at least?? Or do you have to bail?

Sorry about the soap shop, Erin.
Gorgeous here today but I am feeling numb from yesterday's events.
Not going to turn on the news at all today.

Feeling better Wendy? Sounds like maybe Dylan caught it.
:((

Need to come up with a birthday gift idea for a close friend.
She has SO much of my jewelry.
I think I need to come up with something else!

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

I was just invited to put my work in a local gallery show.
It's a good fit for my stuff, but that 60-40 split is just too much. (They get 40%)
Is that standard these days?? I am spoiled by Etsy.

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

I think 40% is pretty common for consignment. I'd balk at 50% that some galleries want.

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

Hey guys,
Yesterday was to much for me. I'm still in a daze. I just don't get it. I think not knowing a definite motive for this jerk is far worse then knowing even if the motive is incredibly crappy. It's way scarier to me, when an old retired guy, who seems normal, is well off, and has no criminal history just goes off and kills a crowd of people.

And then Tom Petty. Gee wiz. He hung on until 8:30 pm from what I understand.....he tried. But he was a d.n.r. So.....

And of course, Adam does not understand that I'm crazy sensitive to this stuff....it makes me pretty miserable. And then he gets crabby.

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

I have a consignment that is 40/60 and a wholesale that is 40/60. The gallery that I do every year at Christmas is 35/65. But I've heard that standard is 50/50 which I think is too much. I'd have to raise my prices for that.

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

Susan, what gallery? That's what heights is taking ☹️ 40%. I'm also spoiled by etsy. I keep telling myself "why did I say yes to this"
But I really need a local presence. People don't know I exist.
I should be just as present as Quandle, Mark, Michael, Debra, Posh and Gulyas, etc........

Re: Falling For Metal Chat - October Edition

I don't remember who was sending a little thing over seas, but someone I know has come up with an inexpensive method. Put it in an altoids tin (you can order those in bulk online) and put it in a big flat ship envelope. As long as it's under 3/4" it's can go the flat envelope rate, which is pretty darn cheap.

Why?
I mean...I am not trying to be famous locally or otherwise.
I know that it's good to get out and hear feedback, etc.
But really, our customers are from all over the world. I like that.
If they like my work locally that's fine, but if not, that's fine, too.
Like I said, spoiled by Etsy.

It gets better... needed to declutter the laundry room so local gas company has access to all appliances when they come to replace my 30 year old gas meter. The shutoff for the dryer is directly behind the washer.

this ^^^ exactly. Unless you are making a huge profit after that 40% cut- what is the point? Unless you want to be "known" in which case I guess it's dues paying. Not a single soul where I live knows I make jewelry but close friends and I like it fine- no one asking me to do repairs, donate to a cause, donate for a silent auction etc. Being "known" has lots of pitfalls
