Does anyone here collect art?

I'm looking at buying my first house so once I have some more room I can buy all the art I've always dreamed of having!

When I get excited for something I like to talk about it as much as possible.... so does anyone have any experience buying art in person or on Etsy or any stories you'd like to share about art purchases? :)

I collect outsider/folk art. I enjoy folk art shows and buying directly from the artists. It's a lot of fun to talk with an artist about how the piece was created and what might have inspired it. I've learned a lot from those who have much more experience than I do.

I collect art, but not the usual way... since I am artist, I've traded artwork with other artists over the years and now have a beautiful eclectic art collection
with some wonderful pieces from amazing artists that became famous.
I also bought a little original drawing here on etsy from another shop and
I see the artist's work in all kinds of places and magazines features now,
you just never know... but my best advice is to buy with your heart,
buy pieces you cannot walk away from, something about them haunt you...

We have quite an eclectic art collection from artists of all levels; we've never bought art online - we really enjoy going to art shows & local galleries. We keep saying we need to put it all in one place and sort out what to hang and what needs to be stored (we have too much to hang!). I'm envious of your soon-to-have space, sounds like fun! (=

I like the advise linda gave "something about them haunt you..". I have experienced this when choosing art. I think a great avenue to start collecting is through emerging artists work such as through university/collage art sales & exhibits....finding great talent right before it hits top gallery prices.

I sell more art than I collect, but what I love to hear is from people who bought a painting from me years ago and it is still dear to them. I agree with Tinfena, buy with your heart. Explore what compels you. and challenge yourself, the best pieces are not always the ones that immediately catch your eye...sometimes they have to grow on you a little
