Re: Looking for Artists to Feature!

Shop Name: Boxes and Origami
What you like to go by: Susan
When I started this shop: August of 2011
Is this your only job? Yes, sort of, but I'm a full-time student too.
When did you realize you had this talent? Ever since I was little, I loved to draw and fold paper swans. As I got older, friends and day care teachers taught me more origami, I continued drawing, and I found different ways through which art could be expressed (like decorative boxes).
Where do you find your inspiration? I am inspired by flowers and other natural items, bright colors, rainbow patterns, and food aha. One of my most favorited items is my cupcake box, which is very cute and was actually mistaken for a real cupcake several times.
Who has been most supportive of your work? My friends' interest in my shop has provided a lot of emotional support, but I think the most support has come from my parents, who encourage to follow what I like to do.
One thing I would like to accomplish: My store is relatively new. But I would like to grow it over time and expand it into something bigger. Eventually I would like to get my own website. Of course, I would still keep my etsy store, though.
Favorite quote: Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead

I know it doesn't really have to do with art, but I really like it.

This is my cupcake box, by the way:

Thanks so much for doing this!

What you like to go by: Alice

When did you start your shop? 2006

Is this your only job? At the moment, yes...I was laid off in May, and have gone nearly full time on Etsy and in the craft show circuit for the time being.

When did you realize you had this talent? I've always made things. I went to school for integrative arts and have done all sorts of things.

Where do you find your inspiration? I like to go to antique stores and flea markets and look at how things were made. I also look a lot at ideas on Pinterest and think, "that looks like fun!" My side project is doing buying work for my antique and vintage Etsy shop, Time Passages.

Who has been the most supportive of your work? My boyfriend, Harlan. I really appreciate his patience and support through this crazy post-job time.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish that you haven't yet? Be able to support myself as an artist without relying on retail jobs to get me through.

What are your words to live by or favorite quote? "Talking about art is like dancing about architecture."

What you like to go by: Mandy

When did you start your shop?: September 1, 2011

Is this your only job?: Yes, but I am currently looking for a part time job, there are not many opportunities in the area I live though.

When did you realize you had this talent?: Back in October of 2009 I decided I
wanted to get my little group of friends a really unique gift, but I didn’t have any money, so I thought why don’t I make them something? A few days later I’m watching the movie Coraline and it hits me!! I was going to make them all a personalized gothic, button eyed, rag doll. It started off rough with some very ugly dolls haha, but I finally found my niche and have been improving them ever since.

Where do you find your inspiration?: I would say I find my inspiration in my love for vampires, dragons, and anything Tim Burton or Anime. My mother was always a big fan of slightly darker movies, clothes, and decorations, so that definitely passed down to me.

Who has been the most supportive of your work?: My mother has certainly been the most supportive of my work. She is the one who taught me to sew, and she has helped me a lot in perfecting my dolls. Also, she never lets me give up and never lies when she knows something I made just didn’t work lol.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish that you haven't yet?: I would like to someday learn how to make clothes without having to use a pattern, I want to know all the basics or how an outfit is put together, that way I am not subject to a pattern.

What are your words to live by or favorite quote?: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Shop Name: AurorasOriginals
What you like to go by: Aurora
When did you start your shop? 2009
Is this your only job? for the moment
When did you realize you had this talent? 16 years ago I started making stuff for friends and family and people would ask me how much I charged because they would love to buy pieces from me.- and here I am.
Where do you find your inspiration? mostly from the beads, shape, color, texture, mixing different colors or shapes to get something unique but classic in style.
Who has been the most supportive of your work? My son! I sent him to Australia using money raised selling jewelry a few years ago- he puts up with the beads all over the floor, sitting in boxes in the living room, and rolls his eyes when new beads arrive in the mail.
What is one thing you would like to accomplish that you haven't yet? Financial security. Seems no matter how much you work, you are always staring at the next bill, or the next payment, or the next expense- being able to rest easy that they are covered without chasing them would be a great relief.
What are your words to live by or favorite quote? Anything is possible, if only you believe! Put your best foot forward and the best of you will shine through. Happiness isnt given, its earned!
