How to encourage comments on blog posts?

Hey All!

I was just wondering how you encourage comments on blog posts? I am fairly new to blogging and average 75-100 views per new post, however I rarely ever get comments (and if I do.. its more than likely a close friend)!

Stacy - congrats on getting people reading your blog. That is the first challenge and you've met it. I'd suggest you start by asking people to comment on your posts. Questions that will have a short answer may work best, but I'd go ahead and also ask for their option (do you agree or not, and why; which do you prefer; what have you tried that worked). It may not happen over night, but keep working on it. And be sure to respond to people who reply. You don't have to respond to each post, but a few general responses (thanks for the responses everyone) help people realize that you are actively engaged in your blog, not just posting.

i agree. i would be more apt to comment on a blog that asked for ideas/advice from its readers.
a quick (silly!) example: you might post a recipe for breakfast muffins, explaining how they're quick and easy to grab and go on early mornings. you might then ask your readers what their favorite go-to breakfast idea is.

read the responses and then your first paragraph of your next post can be a recap or "i loved reading everyone's comments! i didn't know so many of you preferred the 'cereal in a baggie' method!"

if people notice that you actually take the time to read and process their comments - they'll be more inclined to join the conversation =)
