Hi, I'm your team captain. My name is Cali Hackmann and my shop is Bracken Creek Buttons. I started this team to get discussions going about the experience and issues that women have in the woodworking world.

Here is a little bio so you can get to know me better and I am really excited to hear your stories as well.

I have been a woodworker for over 25 years. Even before that I had a class in shop in seventh grade. At that time the noise and scariness of the power tools kind of freaked me out. Now, I love my tools, the more the better :-)

My shop here on Etsy is mostly about turning small items. Especially buttons. My day job is building musical instruments. Primarily I build hurdy-gurdies. If you want to know more about that check out our website www.hurdygurdy.com.

My husband and I have spent years building our shop. I have some fun toys including a computer controlled laser cutter. But, what I most love is the wood itself. The smell, the look, the feel. That amazing glow and depth that some woods have and the dark mystery that others evoke.

I am a romantic and sometimes a cynic, but mostly I'm just a gal who likes to dream about and create things made of wood.

Now, its your turn. Who are you, and what drew you to working with wood?

Re: Introduction

Hello! I studied set design at university and as a part of that became practised in both set building and model making. The model making developed into handmade wooden dolls house furniture. Although I love doing it, it really is a niche market and it is very time consuming as I make everything by hand; no lathes, no laser cutters, not even an electric sander (some of this has more to do with budget than preference)! I have recently started making small items that use some of these traditional woodworking skills but have more of a market (hopefully!) x

Re: Introduction

Hi everyone,
I just found this team and I'm happy to see other women woodworkers on Etsy. I like to build wood furniture, especially rustic furniture with reclaimed wood (when I can find what I need). For our own home, I've built headboards, a bookshelf, a bbq cart, a morris chair and other items. But I've been hesitant to try to sell larger items on Etsy and having to deal with the packing and shipping. So I've been mainly selling smaller items on Etsy, like wall mount coat racks. I've had a lot of fun with it so far, and I'm really looking for ideas on how to market my shop and increase traffic and of course sales.
Please check out my shop when you have a minute - Treetop Woodworks. I'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback you have. I've really enjoyed browsing some of your shops this morning.
Thanks.
Rhonda

Re: Introduction

Hi everyone my name is Joyce Chanel!

Wood... what else can I say? This amazing material, so versatile, so beautiful, it is my passion.. From a simple cutting board to a intricate chest or table. I love how every type of wood has such a difference in colors and patterns.
I first started with Woodworking when I was young, I would help my Daddy when he would be working of things. I guess it runs in the blood, my Grandfather was also a Woodworker, I now use some of the tools he worked with. I really got into Woodworking my freshman year of high school. I took it just to see if I could do anything cool with it...and that's where the obsession began....
My first project I made an Oak porch swing, I liked to start with big projects that I wasn't sure I was able to do. And I did so good that I placed 3rd on it. From there on I took Wood shop classes all thru high school, and was the only girl in Advanced Woodworking and Cabinetry and Mill working in the school. After High school I would build here and there. Than I had a major life changing event happen in my life. I was hit by a Drunk driver, which caused severe whiplash and resulted in me getting a hand full of procedures and 2 major neck surgeries. From than on I decided that if I have to work, I'm gonna do what I love! Since any type of work causes pain, I might as well love what I'm doing, it makes it worth it :)
So to get back into the swing of things I took a few college courses of Woodworking, and than I started my own shop! And I've been building ever since. I'm currently having an obsession with lighting, and my house is filled with my lamps. Besides lamps, I love making tables, statues, and wall art, along with other types of furniture.

The week of April 7- April 14 all items in my store https://www.etsy.com/shop/JoyceChanelDesigns
will be 25% off using coupon code SPRING25

Please stop on over and check it out!

Re: Introduction

Hi there :)
I'm Maya from Israel, not a carpenter myself but handling the Etsy shop for the great stuff made by my partner, Adva. Very happy to find this group! Great designs and ideas, too!

For now we're selling mostly bowls she turns on the lathe (brand new Axminster...). We're always on the lookout for exotic wood, reclaimed wood and special beams with interesting colors and highlights. In addition she renovates furniture and builds new... bottom line, anything "wood". Our business is new so we're still acquiring tools gradually.

I'm new to Etsy so would love to hear any tips from oldtimers. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
