Wire wrapping with copper wire

I have wire wrapping for several years but mainly with Silver plated wire and more recently Argentium sterling silver. I am thinking of making some pieces with copper although I am concerned about tarnish and skin turning green. I have read about using a Sulfur solution to add a patina or antique look and then using renaissance wax to seal. However I have also seen that I can purchase copper wire that is already antiqued and sealed. Can anyone tell me the advantages of doing the process yourself versus buying it already done? Also, if it is better for some reason to do it yourself, does this have to be done prior to using the metal for my wire wraps, or is the process safe to use on a wrapped pendant (generally I am using semi-precious gemstone cabochons). Is there any stones that could be harmed by this method? Seems easier to just buy the wire already antiqued, but I want to find out any pros and cons prior to deciding. Thanks much for any help/advice/information!
