Square or Round Wire,whats your Preference?

My preference,square wire. Love it,I like how I can use it straight or twist it tight and make it look beaded.I Twist it lightly for nice glimmers on earrings.
Half Round looks amazing twisted too,like a ribbon.
I use Round for my earwire.
I know round is a must for weavers. I haven't learned that for of wrapping yet,but at some point I will,so intricate <3 !

Wish I had more jewelry listed,been pretty busy getting all these stones up,but I managed to get a couple rings up.The shop is a work in progress still :-/ . I love making prong rings,maybe because it's always a challenge,advanced or not. I used Square wire to make these and the "lace" around the Swarovski Crsystals is made from half-round twisted wire.

I mainly use round. I've got some nickle silver that is square. It's very hard to work with, however if I had square argentium it might be different.

Argentium is a little tougher to work with,it's "springy" .... a little less forgiving. I love creating the different textures with it. IT just takes a little getting used to I guess.....tape is my friend,lol . Keeps it from moving all over on me.

I work with round; it's easier for my scrolling and shaping techniques and it hammers nicely. I've tried half-round, but it's too flimsy and kinks too easily.

I use square the most, for pendants, rings and bangles. It wraps so neatly, and I love the look when it's twisted.

My favorite wire to work with is gold-filled square - fortunately I bougt a lot of it a while back for a sculpting class I had to miss - I have been combining it with with sterling lately - second choice, but still square. I hope to get some oth the many items listed soon, just aren't enought hours..........

Love working with round gold filled or sterling silver. I also noticed that in my jewelry the wire is 'behind scenes' and the whole attention is on the gemstones. I'm pretty new in wirewrapping and maybe I need more time and practice... :)

well i'd love to use the square wire but i can't import even enough of the round one for my needs so i have to settle with round wire which i flatten when necessary. :(

if silver stays around 30$ for another week or two i'm gonna buy some square wire for sure

I've never actually worked with square before. I'm trying to figure out exactly how I could work them into my designs, but truthfully I'm always a bit hesitant to try something new. I'm a total scaredy-cat most days.

Nicole, I want to learn to make wraps like your avatar pic! You could use square to wrap around coils or just use plain heavier gauge pieces, say 16 gauge, for a stark contrast to the tight coils. I like square with half round unless I am doing basketweave, and I'm thinking about using square for the framework on my next piece. I'm so tired of half a million pieces of blue tape keeping things from escaping.

I bought two feet of triangular 14 gauge that I am longing to find a use for. It's way cool - I think a wrap like Nicole's pic would look good with smoe as an element!

I LOVE round wire and use it most often because it looks so organic. But for the bottom of ring bands (the part that rests under your finger) I think the half round tends to be most comfortable. I also like using square wire (my favorite is an antique copper) when I make bird nests. Slightly twisted before making an organic and slightly messy coil (then bound or woven with a smaller gauge round wire) makes a more "twiggy" look to the nest.

My favorite is square wire...either gold filled or sterling silver. It gives me lots of options.

Although I love dead soft square wire because of the ability to twist it, in developing a recent collection for Texas Aggies (gig 'em), I've had to work with round maroon/burgundy coated copper wire--both to get the school colors and to keep the costs low enough for students to afford. I/ve been pleased with the results. In fact, in doing a recent workshop for fellow jewelry artists (most of whom have never wire-wrapped), I chose to use round vintage-bronze coated copper wire.
