Do I need to get a polishing tumbler?

I love hammered wire designs, but I don't like how the wire turns matte after. Will a tumbler be the best way to polish my wire jewelry? I really haven't had any luck polishing with a Dremel, but I'm hesitant to shell out the money for a tumbler if it isn't going to solve all my problems. So here are all my questions:

Will it give me mirror finish?
Can I tumble pieces that already have crystals?
Is it a good way to remove tarnish?
Do chains get really tangled in them?
Do you have one and love it?

Thanks!
Jess

Re: Do I need to get a polishing tumbler?

Jess I have a tumbler and love it!!!! Here are my answers to your questions.

It will give you a mirror finish to your jewelry. From the research I have done it actually realigns the metal making it slower to tarnish as well.

I have tumbled crystals with out finishes before. Make sure you only tumble for 30 minutes to an hour, no more when tumbling crystals. I prefer to add them and any other gems I may be using after I tumble just to be safe. Most people don't do this and have no problems. You will want to know the hardness of any stones you may tumble. I probably wouldn't tumble anything under 7 in the hardness scale. Others may know more about this though.

It does not remove tarnish. You will still have to scrub your jewelry before you put it into the tumbler.

Chains do get tangles. Never put more than one chain in at a time, otherwise you will be spending some time untangling the mess. One chain is not too bad to unwind after the tumbler.

I personally wasn't sure if it would be worth it in the beginning to have a tumbler. I happened to have a gift certificate and decided to splurge on something that I felt wasn't very necessary but wanted to try. It quickly became my favorite tool. It gives the jewelry such a polished professional look. With out it I would have to use a dremel to polish, which was very time consuming and the buffing wheels would get eaten up quickly with all the weaving that I do. Tthis saves me so much time and the piece comes out even more polished. I can't do with out it now.

Hope this helps.

Re: Do I need to get a polishing tumbler?

I love my tumbler too and would not be without it. Tumbling crystals has never been an issue unless they have a finish, then I only tumble for 20 min and only tumble that one jewelry piece alone.

I don't tumble cultured pearls and had some bad luck with turquoise and shiny black onyx (both were matte afterwards).

Tarnish building up from jewelry being exposed to daily wear does come off no problem, oxidation caused by soldering has to be pickled and scrubbed.

I started using 3 different tumbling barrels (hope that is the correct word) with their own steel shots lately, one for copper, one for oxidized/ blackened with LOS silver and one for argentium, fine silver or sterling silver. I had some problems with the steel shot getting contaminated from the copper I tumbled and got the silver I tumbled later all coppery. It was a pain to get it off again :(

Wish you lots of fun ....

Wow so much info. Thanks so much! Sylvia, thanks for mentioning separate barrels for copper and silver. I wouldn't have thought of that, and I do work with both, so I will have to keep that in mind. I guess I'll have to be extra nice to the hubs, so I can get one. :)

Lovvve my tumbler, it’s Thumbler Tumbler. You can get one for under $100,it works fantastic. Tumbling(burnishing) not only makes your metal shine, it also hardens it, I think the hardening of each piece is a even better benefit than the beautiful shine you get. I usually tumble for 2hrs, unless it is a stone with mohs hardness of less than 6. Like Sylvia said, no pearls….though I have had luck tumbling shell pearls.
When I make Zircon and Swarovski pieces, I even let them go for 3hrs, they come out amazing and very sturdy....especially important for my prong rings. The AB has never come off for me either….which I have heard it does, just depends on the brand tumbler you buy I guess. They are all different.
I use the same barrel for my copper and silver, never had any trouble from it, I always rinse it out good after I tumble copper though.
I have also use it remove tarnish, I spiff up my personal earring collection prob. once a year like this. I just toss them in the tumbler for about 20min and they come good as new. I usually give items that have been sitting for a while a tumble right before I ship them to give them an extra nice shine too. The trick is to use extra Dawn to really lubricate the shot when you are doing a "tarnish tumble".

Just don't get any bright ideas to shine up your wedding ring....it will dull your diamonds, can’t tell u why, but it does..Learned the hard way =/
Here are a couple of Wire Geek threads that might be helpful too…..

The thumler tumbler is a vibrating one right? Are there any thoughts on rotary versus vibrating tumblers?
