St Johnsbury is located in the North East section of Vermont, right on the White River & about an hour south of the Canadian border. I was born in that area & still find it to be one of the loveliest places to visit.
For a small town St J has a gorgeous library & up the street, a wonder of a little museum. Both are red stone Victorian buildings with interiors of dark carved wood & ornate iron railings....
The Athenaeum's site

http://www.fairbanksmuseum.org/The Athenaeum does have a Friends of the Library bookshop just up the street.
The downstreet section of St J has good shopping....
Many of the small towns in Vermont can boast of a book shop - there are many fine used bookshops - here are two (& i will dig up the sites for other shops i have visited):
Green Mountain Books and Prints, Lydonville Vermont - new, used, rare books & a great kids room...
Rivendell Books, Main St, Montpelier Vermont - excellent store & another with a great selection of children's books -
http://rivendellbooksvt.com/Both Montpelier & Lydonville are charming towns - Montpelier being the capital, is a larger town with more amenities, restaurants & shops...
I still have family in Vermont & always make time to check out the used book shops!
