Re: What do you like to upcycle & why?

Hi all,
I love all kinds of re cycling / up cycling. The thought of taking someting old & tatty or destined for a landfill & turning into something useful , pretty or interseting, is inspiring. I've used bottles & glassware for candles & ornaments. Fabrics into cushion covers & new clothes ( recently leather offcuts into bracelets & coasters) Old jewellery into new or I use them on my card & hoseware items. Driftwood into paint brush holders/ desk tidies. I just can't hekp myself from finding inspiration in old & pre loved items whatever & where ever they are. And its nice to know I'm not the only one.

Re: What do you like to upcycle & why?

I'll have a go at upcycling anything I'm capable of because I want to prevent waste whenever possible.

In business my main work is with textiles: I rescue fabric from garments, tablecloths etc to use in my designs such as tatter bustles and hip wraps popular for tribal belly dance and festivals. My repurposed and altered couture uses discarded clothing to create one-off, alternative wear ranging from everyday wear to complex, Steampunk-inspired jackets. The tiniest offcuts go into intricate cuff bracelets. Broken jewellery embellishes anything suitable. Buying from charity shops boosts their sales, especially when I see the potential of sales rail items that will otherwise go for rags and raise much less for them.

It's not always understood that sourcing and preparing rescued fabric takes more time using new fabrics and trimmings so that's a challenge of my work.

I work on community projects too and will shortly be giving workshops using scrap fabric and other throwaway items to make rag wreaths and other cheap and eco Christmas decorations.
