Looking for some advice!

Ok, so I'm really loving my new tie dye kit! I thought it would be fun to start a little from home business while enjoying such a fun craft! I have several designs down pat...of course the basics! I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to where to start with making and selling my products! Should I make random shirts and put them up for sale or should I take custom orders and work with individual people? Also I was wondering how long everyone lets their shirts set, i've read about 4-6 hours minimum but the colors are very simple and light. I have tried 8 hours and 12 hours and i'm getting there! Also is there any treatment I can give the shirts to put off fading? Thank you everyone for the advice!

Hi -- where did you get your tie dye kit?

I would recommend dyeing random shirts and trying to sell them at a farmer's market, bazaars, etc. Then you'll get an idea of what people like, etc. and work from there.

Good luck!

when I started, I sold at shows, then later had a shop until I moved.
consignment can be a good deal, look for an established shop that is close enough to check your stock. expect to give up 25%-35%
good luck!

Re: Looking for some advice!

Hi what kind of dye are you using? I use fiber reactive dyes and I let them set for a minimum of 24 hours, sometimes even longer if it is cold.

Re: Looking for some advice!

Procion fiber reactive dyes applied to plant based fabrics. Presoak in a sodium carbonate solution as a fixative. Allow adequate time for the chemical reaction to complete itself, at least 12 hours, but 24 hours is best. The fabric must stay damp for the reaction to exhaust the dye, so if you have a dry climate, create a humid one or use plastic to prevent moisture loss.
Marketing is dependant on what venues are easily available to you. Festivals are work intensive, but can be very lucrative. Good luck with transforming your hobby into an income.
