Batik

I know batik is not tie dye but there is definitely some overlap in the techniques. Anyone care to discuss batik related topics?

Re: Batik

i've been doing wax resist for 15+ years. Using several different wax formulas for different effects, I have produced clothing, tapestries, and fabrics to be made into accessories and garments.
I prefer to apply the liquid wax with a natural bristle brush or metal stamp (homemade). Temperature control is crucial! Too hot makes toxic fumes and causes the wax to be hard to control. Not hot enough, and the wax is not absorbed, thus no resist. perfect temp is dependant on the composition of the wax mixture.
I teach batik....how close are you to Tennessee??
Peace,
R

Re: Batik

Is there a wax that can be washed out in the washing machine? Something biodegradeable?
Getting the wax out is my least favorite part of batiking... any suggestions to make it easier?
Thanks in advance for your help~ Briar

Re: Batik

Soy wax washes out in the washing machine. We've played with it some to good effect (well, my son to be completely truthful).

Re: Batik

Great, I'll try it! My 9 year old sister learned to batik for her 4H project, and she is teaching me, but we hate the boiling water mess, not to mention the danger for her being around the stove and hot water. Thanks for the help.
God's Blessings~ Briar
